Hard to believe, but after Coleman Young... It did get worse under Kwame M. Kilpatrick ,voted in at age 31.
The city’s imprisoned former mayor, Kwame M. Kilpatrick, and two top aides rigged contracts, collected millions of dollars in bribes and defrauded taxpayers. The federal government set out a 38-count indictment that characterizes Mr. Kilpatrick’s inner circle as a long-running criminal organization.

Currently serving 28 years in prison, he was convicted of over two dozen counts that included charges of racketeering and extortion, adding his name to a list of at least 18 city officials who have been convicted of corruption during his tenure. His punishment ranks among the harshest major state and local public corruption cases. He was thought to of pocketed over $25 million dollars as he helped run Detroit to financial ruin. Known as 'The Hip Hop Mayor' with a taste for custom tailored attire that ran in to the thousands for a suit.

The government said Kilpatrick also tapped a nonprofit fund, which was created to help distressed Detroit residents, to pay for yoga, camps for his kids, golf clubs and travel.
Ordered to pay back $1.2 million restitution, Kilpatrick stood in front of a judge and claimed he could only afford to pay back $6 per month.

Bankruptcy was the only option for Detroit ........... :sos:
Retirement pensions had been ravaged for most all that retired from any City run pension plans.

East St. Louis is still not a place you want to get turned around in. I went over there for a party one night with another buddy of mine. We stopped to pick up a case of Bud Light to take with us just over the MLK bridge. It was 9:30 or so at night and (us being quite white) the clerk says to us, “so, uh, where are you guys from?” Haha. I think he may have been concerned for our safety.
Fun party, by the way. Good food. Had no troubles at all. There’s good people everywhere.

Detroit has a Mayoral Election today. The popular and seemingly competent incumbent, Mike Duggan, is being challenged by Coleman Young, Jr.

The challenger is a minister, who seems to be running on his family name and race. He sounds like a cabbage to me.

I hope Detroit Voters decide on the better candidate.

Still, my sister visits the city regularly to attend the casino and has never had issues. Since we grew up in sight of it and listened to all of the issues past, I'm sure she stays clear of any problem areas.

ALL large cities in the Midwest, Chicago, Detroit, St Louis, etc. are riddled with graft and corruption. A friend who was Chicago PD had to buy his Sgts. stripes by "donating" a couple thousand dollars to a local alderman. When I was growing up there in Chicago in the 50s and 60s, my uncle Gene was an enforcer for, and very close friend of Mayor Richard J. Daly. It was his job to go out and make sure people did not disagree too much with the mayor, or if they did, get them to change their minds. It was very much an Irish & Democratic mob. If you needed a pot hole fixed in the street in front of your house, you visited the local Alderman and "donated" to his campaign fund. The trucks would be there within a day or two fixing it,

It was also understood I could have had any city job I wanted, just call uncle Gene. I once talked to him about being a cop, and he said I would be supplied test scores and an academy date. I decided it wasn't for me... being a cop wasn't the problem but rather being a political appointee bothered me even then. I was a taxi driver in Chicago when I was 18, and never got a ticket, despite my driving antics. Why? - because I kept a $20 bill stuck to the back of my license with rubber cement. I get stopped, hand over license, $20 is deftly scraped off the back, and I got license back. When I moved to California at 20, the first thing my wife said was "Don't even try to bribe a cop here!"

As for Coleman Young II or Jr...... He said he was present, on scene as a witness to a recent SWAT Raid for a Suspected Murder Suspect ..... Saying "This is white supremacy and it has to stop,"
One problem though.... He wasn't there until he set up a photo op.

That's a laugh! The son of a convicted racketeer bitching about the cops. It's funny how people (on both sides) seem to stir up racial hatred in order to gain power. When I was an investigator on Fort Ord 76-77, I had occasion to do personal security for Martin Luther King Sr. (MLK's daddy) when he came on base. At that point, the Army was fully integrated, and it was equal opportunity for all. We had no racial issues or unrest on post. Blacks and whites worked together, partied together, and in general got along very well. After Senior's speech in the main post chapel, suddenly we had racial unrest. I'm just sayin'...

There's hope for Detroit. Current Mayor Duggan won re-election, overwhelmingly. 72% of the voters saw through Coleman Junior and his racial 'word salad'.

We are bordering political issues verses carbines. This is not the place to debate politics.
