The city’s imprisoned former mayor, Kwame M. Kilpatrick, and two top aides rigged contracts, collected millions of dollars in bribes and defrauded taxpayers. The federal government set out a 38-count indictment that characterizes Mr. Kilpatrick’s inner circle as a long-running criminal organization.
Currently serving 28 years in prison, he was convicted of over two dozen counts that included charges of racketeering and extortion, adding his name to a list of at least 18 city officials who have been convicted of corruption during his tenure. His punishment ranks among the harshest major state and local public corruption cases. He was thought to of pocketed over $25 million dollars as he helped run Detroit to financial ruin. Known as 'The Hip Hop Mayor' with a taste for custom tailored attire that ran in to the thousands for a suit.
The government said Kilpatrick also tapped a nonprofit fund, which was created to help distressed Detroit residents, to pay for yoga, camps for his kids, golf clubs and travel.
Ordered to pay back $1.2 million restitution, Kilpatrick stood in front of a judge and claimed he could only afford to pay back $6 per month.
Bankruptcy was the only option for Detroit ........... :sos:
Retirement pensions had been ravaged for most all that retired from any City run pension plans.
