I was told by the current owner that the serial is U37330 or Y37330. He's not quite sure about the letter though.Quote:

I have an L39A1. It is from 1972 SN UE.72.A1088. It has a spirit bubble level on the front sight. It is marked 'RARDE' in grey italic paint of the left side of the buttstock. The buttstock and forend are blonde beech with the standard L-E grip (and not the C grip). The rear sight is the AJP TZ 4/47. It has a standard late manufacture aftermarket No 4 303 magazine.
This rifle is now located in Philadelphia. It will soon be located in Boston as my wife is the newest VP at IBM. She starts her new job with IBM on Monday. We will be relocating to Boston.
I have scanned earlier post and noted that UE.72. A1086 went to stores at Donnington. This is the rifle owned by the US Service member in Iraq.
I am a former Infantry Officer in the US Army. I served as an infantry commander in US 7 Infantry (Cottonbalers) and as a Foreign Training Officer in the USDoS/USDoD Military Assistance Program, etc.
Note: I made a typo in the header-- SN should read UE.72.A1088 as in the body of the message.

It appears that a rifle of each type was sent for evaluation ( guessing) by them. I have evidence that they were also sent an Enforcer by ROF Enfield.
Maybe they tested ammunition, performance whatever - who knows ?
Google RARDE there is loads of history etc on line.

Thanks!! I did not know what RARDE meant. Test and evaluation might explain the green spirit level attached to the base of front sight. The rifle has a smooth painted heavy 26 inch Stainless barrel that is 13/16 at the muzzle. It has a target type crown that is bare Stainless. I bought this rifle at auction. The provenance other than the auction broker is unknown.
So more or less: RARDE = Qinetiq = "Q"

Rifle T39853 was part of batch number 4 which consisted 30 weapons and has a recorded conversion date of 4th Jan 1971 , on completion it was sent to store at Donnington.
