There seem to have been ammunition issued more for its ability to defeat armor than due to any increased accuracy.
In looking over headstamp pages there was one small company mentioned that produced match grade .303 ammo in the WW1 era they seem to have closed down in 1919, so match grade ammo would have been available.
I also ran across a discussion on a 7.62 ammo with an L42 code that was not meant for use in the L42 rifle, the disignation being missleading. It was a 155 gr ammo meant for the later sniper rifles.

NO, NO, NO...... this is misinformation Alfred that is being taken for fact and being perpetuated by you. The L42 amunition was not sniper ammunition or ammunition for sniper ANYTHING. It was a general issue 7.62mm ammo that, by chance, had a designation of L42. The trials team, including me, fired probably a million rounds of it during trials relating to other matters. The trials certainly weren't sniper trials either...........

Thanks Simon ...
Ok, folks.....
It started out as a very interesting thread about sniper ammunition, that indeed wandered somewhat into discussions about sniper sights on the P14. However, it still seemed to retain reasonable content value for Enfield and P14 collectors.
Unfortunately, it's now deteriorated into massive cut-n-pastes of largely academic and mostly irrelevant material scraped from various other Internet web sites. As could be predicted, that was followed with traditional "baiting" by the usual cast of characters, whom for whatever reason, don't seem to be able to control their need to publicly incite a fight to beat on each other. :bash:
We have warned everyone in the past using the bulletin board's built-in Infractions System (click here), plus in some cases issued temporary one month "time out" bans to see if we could motivate people to control themselves. These seem to be only effective for short times and then the warnings wear off. :(
As a result, our patience is at an end with certain members (you know who you are). So, from now on, any baiting to incite others, or rising to take the bait of others will summarily result in a Permanent Lifetime Ban from the site, without any further informal warnings, or use of the formal Infractions System.
All we ask is that members refrain from posting nonsensical and often unnecessary cut-n-paste content, or largely irrelevant "cute" pics, behaving in a more mature manner towards each other. ;)
To the rest of our membership, I do apologize that we tend let this kids "sandbox" behaviour sometimes drag on too long before we step in, but it is a fine line trying to maintain social order and the individual member's right to express their opinions on our hobby, particularly when it involves anonymous identities with communication styles coming from so many varied intellectual and cultural backgrounds.
Thanks for everyone's patience ...
