What should be my next WWII era firearm?

Well, I decided to pass on the Arisaka's that was at the store with what infor I have researched. But I do have another question:

I was looking at some auction sites and I saw an Arisaka Type 99 that was up. From what I was able to learn, was that the serial numbers seemed to match, minus the bolt, but i don't think that is surprising. The mum has an "X" through it, but it's left the mum relatively in tact. the man selling it has said that there has been no restoration work on it and that hte rifling is strong and bore is bright.

Since people here have more knowledge on the subject that I do, anyone think i should try and get this one?

That one looks in pretty good shape over all...if I was buying that one would be a candidate for sure.

Depends on the price and what you want. Stock looks like it might have been refinished but these aren't the best photos to make that determination. Looks more like an oil finish than the original. Some guys like matching bolts, some guys consider struck mums to be the same as ground. I don't worry much about the bolt matching and for a struck mum, that one looks pretty good. All depends on the price.

The price is good, though there are still a couple more days so I will have to wait and see. The man has said that there was no restoration work on it, but I have asked him again just to be sure.

Here are a few more pics. Let me know if there is anything that i might need to ask about or if i have overlooked.

It has a little rust on the safety knob it but nothing I'd worry about. I still think it has been refinished. I don't know that it was sanded but it just does not look like the normal finish on these. It is hard to judge from photos though.

The stock does look weird to me as well, could just be the lighting, could be something else.

Ok, so i just got a message from teh seller and he told me that as far as he knows, this rifle hasn't been worked on. He did mention, "Stock has a less handling marks than most, but doesn't look to have been sanded or refinished to me... at most it may have been treated with some linseed oil at some point in the past."

I have asked him to send me any detailed pics he has of it so that you guys can take a better look at it. There anything specific I should ask him to photograph?

See, that in it's self is a warning. The original finish is more like a shellac...not like our oils. He might just be saying it wrong.

So are you saying that the stock could have been altered, or that he is describing it wrong?

There's lots of pics here of these with original finish. It to me looks more like a shellac finish when in good shape. If it's been oiled, it's already been sanded. I'm not sure that matters to you though, it looks good from the pics. Here's some pics on another thread from a couple years back. Have a look and compare to yours...
