Hi folks,
New guy here, 69 years of age, got a new toy (is that bad form, calling a lethal weapon a "toy"?
I have recently acquired a Smith&Wesson .38 J-frame "Converted by Cogswell & Harrison, Ltd., London" stamped on the left side of the frame below the cylinder release.
Serial # 956993. It is not a "V" model, nor does it have the Canadian stamp.
The barrel indicates "38 S&W CTG" but appears to be chambered for the .38 Special.
The .38 Spl "seems" to fit while the shorter 38 S&W is presently unavailable for comparison.
On the left side of the lanyard ring, opposite the serial #, there is a faint "WB" stamp
The walnut (?) grips are plain checkered, no S&W logo.
The barrel is shortened to 2 3/4" with a modern sight addition, a serrrated ramp (no half-moon original). The trigger is serrated.,
There is little evidence of the original blueing and there is some corrosion. The trigger and hammer show coloring of case-hardening. The piece appears well-worn, but operational. I have not fired this gun yet. Not sure about the proper ammo.
Unfortunately, I do not have photos at this time, but perhaps will later.
Anybody here know about these puppies?
Thanks, CPW
CPW here... my other left, i.e., right side "WB", left side on butt is serial #.
I'm Jim. Guess I'm not a "new" member--per my profile I joined in 2010. Got sidetracked for a few years with some medical issues, now I'm back reading my way through past posts on the Springfield '03 board. Been shooting milsurps since. . . '69 or so? I'm not sure what the first one was, I was 3 years old and Dad sat behind me to hold the rifle up (and soak up the recoil). Never really stopped.
Hi ya'll,
I've been collecting and learning for over twenty years now. I love this site. I think I found my new favorite place!:dancingbanana:
Thanks
Greetings!
It's a pleasure to find this website and join all of you here on the forum!
My interests lie mainly with the service weapons employed by the USA since the introduction of smokeless powder, so the 1903 Springfield variants and the M1 Garand are high on my list.
Compared to many of you, my knowledge is that of a rank amateur, so I will probably learn a lot more from your posts than actually be able to contribute much of my own, and I certainly look forward to learning from all of you.
Thanks!
Regards,
Jefferito
