"Inland" Manufacturing M1 Carbines - 1st hand experience

Jim, are you aware of Inland issuing any recall or at least an advisory to inspect on these bolts? Seriously, 8 out of 8 is an alarmingly high percentage. As a former military and LEO armorer, I am disturbed by the progressive deformation of these bolts. With the bolt being subjected to 40,000PSI every shot, it is a disaster waiting to happen. If I were Inland's lawyers, I would be having a cow. While I appreciate Inland's top management not wanting any possibility of negative press at this juncture of early production, they should realize that acting responsibly in the shooter's best interest with eventually pay back with dividends. Hoping none of the owners have or find out, is just NOT responsible. If someone dies from eventual bolt failure, that will be the end of their venture.

We should remember post #33 where we were told firsthand "There is no problem" Or words to blanket that...yet it goes on. I'd love a brand new M1, but it won't be one of those. If we had a problem in Canada with them, we might as well be out on a raft looking for help.

We are in agreement and this message was shared with Inland very clearly before you wrote it. I promised them what I wrote in that e-mail would remain between me and them as I have no interest in being a part of any future litigation regardless of what was involved. Jim doesn't do court and that's held steadfast since I retired.

In their response they requested I let everyone know to bring any issues encountered to their attention and allow them to rectify any issues. The rest of the response was consistent with what has already been posted on this forum.

Words are nice but behavior carries far more value with me. The message has been delivered clearly and owners should address their problems with the manufacturer. We'll have to wait and see if they make any announcements.

As for me, at this point I'm still in research mode waiting to see these new changes and what they do with the issue of the existing bolts. They are aware there is a web page coming at some point. What will be on it will be factual and illustrated with photos. I don't do slander or libel. Far more positive things to do in life.

What would help me is hearing from other owners. Whatever carbine I get as a replacement will be closely examined and tested but once again one carbine is inadequate to properly assess what has been done.

I realize there is a need to get the word out to owners to check those bolts and other parts. For my website, I need to weigh that against the time it takes to get the facts and make sure they are accurate. Unfortunately, in the meantime buyers and owners will have no info available on my website. I don't intend on waiting any longer than it takes to due a fair and accurate assessment. May be a few months but won't be a year.

I've spent more time on this forum in the past 7 weeks than I have on all forums in my lifetime. No exaggeration. I have to stay focused due to the amount of time required to do what I do. Others have occasionally e-mailed me with forum posts to look at and sometimes respond too. I'm only me and human.

Soon there will be a website replacing USCarbines.com. It will include all that is on USCarbines.com. It will be specific to the U.S. Carbines Caliber .30 I refer to as the GI carbines. I'm still trying to build the basic site before the name change. Will be able to make an announcement on it sometime in the next month. The new site will open a number of opportunities for people who wish to be a part of it. Will say more when I can. Involves more than just me. And is going to take time before it's what I hope it becomes.

Was contacted today by Inland Manufacturing arranging to ship a replacement carbine to my FFL holder. Because it's a new serial number it has to go through the legalities including the 10 day "cooling off" period before I can pick it up. Likely won't take possession til beginning of November.

I thought CalGuns attorneys had won that case waiving the 10 day cool off for those of us who obviously have, and have registered, firearms. Not to get into the political end of things. Is what it is. Won't make it in time for my next planned range trip 20 Oct. All day trip to the rifle range. Won't be able to test fire it until later November due to a trip.

My "Inland" carbine was returned to the manufacturer on 20 Aug 2015. 09 Oct 2015 I was asked my FFL's info as they would be sending a replacement. This info was provided more than once and after several requests as to status I was advised it was supposed to have been shipped 22 Oct 2015.

Without getting into everything between these dates I have been left wondering if they if they are playing stall tactics or have actually shipped the carbine. A request for a tracking number has had no reply as of yet. I have tried to give them the benefit of the doubt but the doubt has become stronger given the interactions I've had with them.

They are still shipping carbines with their distributor MKS Supply also shipping. The owner of "Inland Manufacturing" is also selling them, marketing samples included, on Gunbroker and his website for American Western Outfitters.

If the carbine has shipped and doesn't somehow get lost I'll likely be out of town for 2 weeks when I can pick it up. May get a look at it before the trip if it shows up.

I'm still interested in hearing from those who own one of these as to their experiences. Would like to ask they check a number of parts for excessive wear, as shown on this thread earlier. Some folks won't know to look for it or what to look for.

Maybe the FFL will get it today, two days after they said it shipped. I also asked for a tracking number on my replacement bolt and they didn't follow through. I received the bolt though so I would give them until Monday and then call Norton to see what's up.

More importantly, they should actually FIX the rifle. If it comes back with another warped receiver and soft bolt......................

Two Months to send a you replacement for an badly defective weapon, even though they are dumping them into the market in the meantime???????? I hope they are not taking lessons from the Auto Ordnance play book.

Speaking of Auto Ordnance, I am not an AO Carbine fan (though I loved their Tommy gun), but I absolutely LOVE my Kahr polymer framed CW45 compact .45 ACP! It uses 1911 magazines and eats any ammo I feed it. How can they do so well on the handguns and Tommy Guns, but screw up the carbines??? Sorry, I digress.

Kahr tommy's are "junk". They have serious bolt problems and **** poor customer service!

I'm not certain they have been assembling and selling them the entire two months. Some of what's out there for sale was there already. Since we don't know their production capabilities it's hard to tell what's from when. However, American Western Outfitters is the president of Inland, Ron Norton, and they've had them available.

I'm still not ready to declare what they make as all being problematic. I'll see if and when the carbine shows up and what's different if anything. But I want to see others with serial numbers higher than the one I receive as mine is supposedly the "corrected" version. Them knowing it will be used for my website I wouldn't be surprised if it's a marketing version.

Wish I had more time to devote to them but the Carbine Club changes and website are a priority at the moment. I do have a new piece of information rea Inland that I need to investigate and see if it's true. May take a month but it's worth the follow up.

Given the price and what people have been encountering my recommendation for now is look elsewhere. Wait for a fairly frequent holiday sale at Fulton Armory and buy their barreled receiver. It includes the front sight, barrel band, gas fixins, bolt group and has been headspaced. On sale they're about $640. No other current production carbine comes close to the quality Fulton turns out. All you'll need is a rear sight, trigger group and wood. Should work out to be about the price Inland is going for.

Inland needs to prove their carbines reliable and worth the price they are selling for. Given the problems I've encountered with them and see others having I've been pretty nice in hopes they can improve. But until they have proven themselves I can't recommend them.

As I develop additional info I'll share it here. Two months is too long but if that's what it took to get the job done, it's worth the wait.
