Its clear that the thread is definitely on the side of the Lee lineage whilst there are many other contenders with fine attributes some that have seen battle the Lee offers the average foot soldier reliability in harsh conditions, good robust design that could take a fair amount of abuse, accurate enough for the average soldier to eliminate the enemy at a reasonable distance, good magazine capacity.
History has proven the design one of the greatest in modern history in the fact that it is or was until recently still in active front line use by the Canadian Forrest Rangers (No.4's) and is still in use around the world in battles though on the wrong side of the line
The Canadian Rangers are formed with Indigenous people along with other residents to patrol the north under the direction of the department of national defense. Forest rangers would be conservation officers under the department of natural resources. Not much forest up in the barren lands.
Greatest bolt action battle rifle..... one paper I would vote for US Model 1917, Model 98 derived action, good peep sights, 30.06 rimless and just very robust. In the real world, the Enfield seems to be in front for good reasons. They have proven themselves for a long time in many places. A good condition No 4 and a can of good surplus ammo gave me an indication of why they deserve the title. Other honorable mention for two other rifles; Of all my military surplus bolt action rifles, I put the most rounds accurately on target with my Swedish M-38, and it is a beater. It also lost less accuracy and still functioned well when very hot and dirty, this was shooting a lot of ammo in the dusty dirty open desert. Another beater is a Finnish Mosin M-39, accurate and easy to get ammo for, but once it got hot and dirty it became a bit fussy. Both of these rifles have less than great sights. The No 4 Enfield or the SMLE are what I see if somebody says the words "bolt action battle rifle".
