Light French Rifles, cal. .577
Hello, I'm a new member.
In researching the arms of the Third Iowa Vol. Cavalry I've found at least five companies that were partially armed with "Light French rifles, cal. .577." through 1863. That is one of the pre-printed column headings for "Rifles, First Class" on the Quarterly Ordnance Stores summaries created by the Ordnance Department sometime before 1896 from the original company and regimental returns before the originals were destroyed.
I've been trying to locate more specific information as to what those arms were. Can any members shed light on this?
