Hi everyone. I recently purchased a 1873 period Frog for my Trapdoor Bayonet. However, the leather has shrunk. What can I use to soften this antique leather so I can slide it on the sheath. Thanks.

Dubbin lavishly applied when the leather is hot after a sun tan? Let is soak in, try, repeat.
Thanks, I'll get some.
Gentlemen (and others),
New member, but not new to firearms. Like I assume with many of you, I've been involved with firearms for most of my life (currently 61). As to military firearms, I've got five of my late fathers. One is a 1911 in .45 ACP built using an early Colt frame, topped with a later Remington slide (w/adj rear sight). Next is a Type-99 Japanese Arisaka in 7.7mm, with folding mono-pod and winged ladder-style rear sight (with intact chrysanthemum). Next is an M-1 Carbine in .30 carbine. After that is a 1903-A3, that I've yet to shoot (which also includes the carbine, and the Type-99 Arisaka - which I've got no ammo for, yet). Last, but certainly not least, is what was my fathers pride and joy of his collection, a 1903 Sporter in .30-06.
As to my civilian firearms, I've too many to list, stored in two safes.
Researching (who made) the 1903 Sporter is what lead me here.
I'm new to this. How can I create a new post with pictures? I'm looking at buying a P-14 but is has something strange on it.
Hello Gents and Ladies,
While I am not new to collecting--I have been fascinated with military history and military collectibles since I was a kid--I am new to this community. I am a native of Pennsylvania but now reside in Georgia--the state, not the former Soviet republic. I got "serious" about collecting in 1979 and since then have collected just about everything related to the United States participation in WWII. My collection consists of guns, knives, cartridge boxes, uniforms, SSI, posters and other ephemera, especially home front items. But I haven't limited myself to U.S. military collectibles of that era. I have some items that go back as far as the War of 1812 and I have German and British pieces from conflicts prior to and up to WWII. I also collect antique fishing tackle and even old fireworks. Those hobbies drain money from military "stuff" and at times, I wonder why. Right now I am focused on SMLE rifles and, although my "collection" is pitifully small, I hope to expand it in the years to come. One thing that concerns me (and hopefully some of you will respond to this) is that I cringe whenever I see import stamps on firearms. In your opinion, is it better to stay away from guns with import stamps? (I only have one right now, but there are temptations everywhere.) Hope to get some response on this. Thanks so much. Gary/Aero626
Looking forward to learning some things and best reguards to all.
Been lurking here for a few years, and only just decided to post recently. This forum has been a terrific resource for browsing and learning silently, and I think I am at the point where I am ready to start asking questions.
A big thanks to all the contributors and the knowledge they share. Perhaps, in time, I will be able to return the favor.
Hi, I’ve been around this forum for a while and as yet had nothing to add to conversations. What I must say now is that this forum has been a real pleasure for me. I enjoy finding out about things from people with experience and I find that here.
As the old saying goes “ Learn from the mistakes of others as you will not live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself “
Thanks everyone
By the way my latest hunt is for a Ross 1910 model E commercial sporter in 303. Any body want to inform me ? Thanks
for promptly renewing my dormant account - happy to be back -
Hi all,
Im from Australia, I joined this forum to further my knowledge of the old milsurps i currently own including 2x SMLE No1 mk3*'s and a Chang Kai Shek Mauser.

Hey y'all,
Hailing from D. Crockett country born in D. Boone's Gap town. Marine veteran, LE veteran, Federal Security Officer (retired).
Have been "accumulating" milsurps since a wee lad; NOTE: I am NOT a collector. I "accumulate" military firearms. "Collectors" have too many requirements for each piece. For a collector it's like building a palace: Every stone has to be the correct series, size, number, shape, color, etc., etc. For an "accumulator" the piece just needs to be "cool" to own, with a heavy dose of, "I just want one", thrown in.
I have my first question and as soon as I find a place to post it I need info on BRNO 98/22 rifles.
Hello, just introducing myself...
Love the history of military firearms. Using this site for education.
Have trained at MILCUN, shot at Connaught ranges.
Thanks,
Mark
Hey,
A (short) introduction: I'm just a guy who collects out here in California, and poorly plays music as a hobby.
I am pleased to now be a part of the milsurps community!
Hi guys!
New member, French and M1 Carbine addict!! I have been reading for a while, time to start writing!

Hello the camp. New here. Wish I'd discovered this years ago when I was heavier int MilSurps and had a C&R, but health problems had life on hold for a while. Never too late to learn new stuff though.
So.. hello. Not much to say except I am in a quandary and was hoping to get help and maybe help in return later on down the road. I have come into possession of a generator that I can find no information about. It is a 1952 model and fairly massive. The engine runs but, I have yet to know what it puts out in electricity. It is a Portable Generator set Winterized, Model m60da6-w Fermont is the manufacturer. I like it because it is quiet came on a trailer and so far with tires it has only cost 800. I would appreciate any help on finding information about this machine. Thank you in advance Alsoin in case this is just a forum about firearms I have a 1946 Turkish mauser with a modified bolt to allow for top mounted scope. I use vital shock rounds and target practice with a 800 meter starter.
Hi all,
New to Milsurps. Pretty new to collecting, right now focusing on pre-1950 rifles. Already seeing a potential storage issue as I travel down the rabbit hole.
Hello Everyone,
This is my first post. It is nice to find a forum for my interests in military surplus arms. What brings me here today is an old Trapdoor Springfield that has been sporterized. The seller who is an out of state FFL says he does not need to send it to a licensee. I have checked the ATF definitions and cannot find an answer. The gun is over 100 years old but has been sporterized with a shortened to 27 in. barrel and cut down stock. Therefore, it is not in original condition and it can fire modern made and available ammunition. Is the dealer correct in saying I do not need to have an FFL? Many thanks for sharing your expertise.
Hello and thank you for adding me to the the site.
I am retired from the military, love milsurps, black powder and most other shooting sports. Here to learn as much as I can and maybe even help someone in the future...
Hello everyone, new to this forum. Live in the Atlanta metro area. Thanks!
Good day to all you milsurps lovers. I to enjoy finding, rebuilding, shooting, and learning more about all thins milsurps. Look forward to getting to know the group.
Hello, i haven't been collecting very long but have recently got my hands on a lee enfield.
Hello all.
I've been a gun enthusiast for well over 60 years. In that time I've owned and enjoyed a number of Enfields including a very nice Mark V Jungle Carbine. More recently I acquired a Norwegian 1895 / 97 Krag-Jorgensen 6.5X55 carbine manufactured in 1922. The rifle has been sporterized with monte carlo stock and a Karl Kaps 2.5 Pwr scope. In trying to research the rifle I landed on this amazing site. I'm anticipating learning lots here.
Hew guy from South Dakota...used to be from Illinois. Great place to be FROM, man does that place SUCK! I am glad to be out here and FREE!

Looking for Krag cavalry carbine parts
I've used this site for years to find answers. Lots of memory is stored here and it is useful.
Hello, I just acquired a Remington 1903A3. Let me introduce myself. I'm a retired service member. I served 8 years in the Marine Corps, then 13 years in the Army National Guard as a Master Recruiter. I'm very familiar with the 1903 as a Cadet in Navy JROTC using it for the Drill Team for 4 years. It was a rifle that I wanted to have in my collection for a long time. I recently was given the chance to own this fine rifle from another collector of 1903's.

Good Afternoon,
I grew up hunting and fishing in South East BC.
I recently joined this group to to learn a bit more about some older military rifles. In particular I am interested in Ross rifles.
Cheers
Hello everyone! Im a rookie here. But Im anxious to become a part of this community. I hope that I might meet others like me who are interested in military related firearms and what not.
Just checking in...deep interest in M1 Carbine,,,
I just found this forum yesterday (and after having to get help from Doug registering) just signed up this morning. I've been shooting for over 60 years, bought my first surplus rifle at 13 (an 1891 Argentine Mauser for $13.00), have been reloading for 43 years, collecting most my life (buying, using, and then selling for something else) and have had more milsurps than the average guy pass through my hands. I really enjoy firearms and I'm sure this will be a nice place to hang out.
Just saying Hi!
Recently purchased an 1891 Argentine Mauser and have learned a lot already, site is a great resource.
I'm a 30 something male living out by Shilo, MB.
Interests include schematics collecting, motorcycles, CNC Machining, 3D printing and old surplus gear. Not currently owning any firearms but interested in the future of exploring owning some historic and modernization examples.
Looking for some help with parts kits in Canada as well as interested in partnerships to bring new life to old parts through fabrication of long missing or de-milled hardware.
New member. Joined of my own free will and am excited to be here. Not just saying that because it's what "They" told me to say, I swear.
Greetings.
Relatively new to serious collecting. Been hunting, shooting, reloading since childhood. Owned a few Mauser's back in the 70's. Back then I was butchering them for the k-98 actions for use in custom builds. Wish I knew back then what I know now.
Presently own one Springfield Garand 1955 barrel and action in new CMP wood. Got in on the CMP 1911 round 2 dealio. According to rgn# I expect it sometime next week.
Most recent requisition is a 1903 Springfield project. It's a 1920, Ser# 1196717. Barrel dated 5-20. The bolt is polished and is stamped J6. The receiver rails are polished, and it's been drilled and tapped for a Lyman 48S receiver sight. I'll be posting questions/pics in the appropriate section soon in hopes of finding out exactly what this rifle is, or isn't.
Thanks for having me. Prepare yourself for my stupid questions. Steve in Ohio
Glad to be among M1 Men.
Hi folks. New member here. Have browsed the site many times and decided to join. Recently purchased a carbine from Royal Tiger out of Ethiopia. The stock and handguard have no identification markings - they appear to have been sanded off or otherwise removed. Receiver is Quality Hardware, whole gun has been reworked with some parts and assemblies replaced. Appears in very good condition - ordered a bore scope to check out the bore. Will have more info as time goes on, etc.
Hello all
I recently found myself in possession of a 1943 Globe Firearms model 201 sporter Longbranch No4 Mk1 Lee Enfield..I remember seeing these in Eatons and Canadian Tire as a kid in the late 60s/70s....Funny how things come full circle....I had a Lee Enfield I bought from a WW II vet way back in 80s... it was also a sporter... had a beautiful custom Monte Carlo Stock..came from War stock... never saw action..or use for that matter..it was mint..dont think that gun had more than 50 rounds through it ..I eventually sold it ..but condition wise is far cry from my current Lee.... which needs some work..lots... so it seems..but that is a topic for another post..so my search for information led me here...and from what I can tell..I am in good company..so I would like to extend big appreciative thank you in advance to eveyone for your combined efforts in contributing and the sharing of your knowledge and wisdom.
hello this is usmc1953. interested in military arms, looking forward to using this forum.
Good morning to all. Thank you for allowing me to join.
Been lurking for quite sometime, and decided to dive in.
I've been intrigued by all aspects of militaria since I was a small boy.
Thanks to all who put so much time and effort into the sight.

Hey there everyone!
Brand new to these forums and have to say it's pretty amazing to see all the content, particularly are WW2 firearms, particularly one of my favourite, the Sten!
I look forward to interacting with other firearm enthusiasts and hope to learn a lot here!
Hello all!
New here, lifelong firearm owner, and in the last few years starting acquiring a couple milsurps and look to learn a lot more.
Hey guys. Just got around to joining your forum. I’m from eastern NC, retired and am a lover of old martial Colts, Smiths and Webleys. Prior to my retirement I found out about the cool Krag but since have discovered the 1903 Springfield. I like to find sporters and rebuild them back into what they were, more or less. Here’s a 1940 reblued Winchester M12 rebuilt into a trenchgun that I did a few years ago. I’ve also done a busted stock, polychoke M12 into a riot gun and am currently putting a No1 Mk3 enfield sporter back right. Fun stuff.

I am a new member. I was born into the firearms business as my parents owned AR Sales Co. Currently I am an armorer in the motion picture industry.
I live in San Antonio, Texas....since birth 77 years ago. Just bought an 1891 Cavalry Carbine because I like short, full stocked rifles. I hunt mule deer in west texas on a lease where we have a tradition of using iron sighted rifles (or pistols). Researching best way to use an aperture sight on this carbine. Have a bolt peep on a Mannlicher carbine 6.5 x 54and one on a Mauser 458 lott. With old eyes much easier to get a good sight picture. A guy in Montana makes a copy of the Rigby bolt peep but I will need a much longer cocking piece for the Cavalry Carbine.
Milsurp website very interesting and helpful.
Hello everyone. I have been collecting mil-surps for about 7 years now. For a while I was collecting from various countries but recently been concentrating with US bolt actions. Krags, 1903s, 1903-A3s, and 1917 Enfields, especially the 1903 Mark 1.
Actually, I have a question about the Springfield 1903 mark 1.
Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

Greetings, All.
As a new member, it is with mixed emotion that I advise that I didn't heed the words of caution from Mr. Terrence Evans in his book "A Guide to the Lee Enfield Rifle .303 No 1 SMLE" wherein he advises, "If you have not already purchased a Lee Enfield rifle, then my advice to you is DON'T! These rifles should come with a health warning as they are highly addictive."
Yes, I've been bitten by the Enfield bug and yes...it's a STEEP learning curve!! I look forward to leveraging the seemingly vast knowledge and experience of MILSURP.COM members to help in broadening and deepening my understanding and awareness of these magnificent rifles and others that I'm privileged to shoot and enjoy.
thanks for the addition, will be looking here occasionally for Garand stuff I need or to trade.
New member. Also on CGN, I Have been collecting for 24 years.
Take care y’all
Hello..just wanted to introduce myself to the community. I am Gary Hadley and am pretty old for a young guy. I am over 70! I have collected a few older military firearms in my time and found the forum where it looks like I can ask a few questions or maybe answer a couple, also. I am looking forward to the future.
Hello everybody. I recently acquired a restored BSA Lee Enfield No 4 Mk 1, and this site cropped as a great resource. Happy to be here.
Best, Jon
Hello All,
New member here, just started collecting and have enjoyed learning allot from the site. Thank you all.
1943 Remington 1903A3
1943 BCD Mauser k98k
1945 No.4 MK1* latest one
Kia ora
Just bought a "Fulton Regulated" LE No 4 mark 1/2 in 0.303 .
My previous 0.303 was a typical Kiwi Cut-Down that was good for shooting a horse at 6 inches distance but not at all accurate. It had a M.O.A. of about 36inches.
Quite excited to enter a few local shoots here in Taranaki to see if i can hit the target.
This forum has excellent information and advice so thanks to all the previous contributors.
Looking forward to learning more
Cheers

Hi, new member. I am interested in having a Bren LMG parts kit made into a semi. I was given a name of a builder and was hoping someone has used his services or knows of his reputation before I send off my parts kit? His name is Jim Kelly out of New York.
Hi all, I am a new member from Texas.
Hello All, New member here from Oklahoma. Not a collector but I recently came into about 20 military rifles and pistols that have made me appreciate that others do collect them. I am mainly interested in researching what I actually have. A couple of what I have are:

Hi,
I'm Paco, mostly active on most FN Herstal forums.
However, i do have an amount of WW2 weapons, Vietnam, and other conflicts.
I'm both in the army and in civilian life I know, complicated). I'm co founder-boardmember of the Belgian Gun Collectors Association. Belgische Vereniging Van Wapenverzamelaars - BVVW
I do weapon and munition testing for living and also teach kids war history in civilian school. (Yes, i take the weapons with me)
I write for a Dutch and a French gunmagazine. Currently writing a book on the FN FNC rifle.
It seems to take forever.
I 'll post some reference pics on Belgian weapons asap. If you are in need for detailed pics on FN weapons, please say so. Let's say it is easy to touch unmodified and original weapons to me.
Below, some weapons in my collection.

Awesome collection!
Hi everyone! From North Alabama here. I have spent most of my days lurking around the CMP boards with the same screen name. I am more of a collector than a shooter these days. My back and legs kinda prevent me from having a nice range day. I am in to any U.S Milsurp and really anything else related to WW1 &2. But my collection is kind of all over the place! Took long enough for me to sign up here! Have a blessed day, everyone!
I’m not a collector but I do own an M1 Garand and a M1 Carbine that I purchased from Midway USA. I have learned a lot from this group already, thank you.
Good day, I have been active on CGN and gunpost for a few years. I came across this group. Very interested to learn more, read, and post stuff for sale. and of course buy and buy !
thank you .
Markus , Moncton, NB
Good day all!
My name is Patrick Lowe & at present I live in the burning wasteland of the PNW. In my searches for information, this site has come up many times, all the questions asked were thoughtfully & respectfully answered. So it was a "no brainer" to make the leap & join.
I putter with a business called cdvs.us (Combat Disabled Veterans Supply), where I am the...wait for it....You guessed it, I AM the disabled part of that name. If you get the chance drop on by and see if they have anything interesting. Again, for me, it's a cool place to hang out, & be around stuff that I find cool. 99% of what they sell is MILSURP.
I’m Coltboy Retired USMC with over 50 years collecting experience.
Good afternoon,
I have been collecting milsurps for about 18 years now. Hope to learn more here.
I'm Steve, from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. I've fished and hunted on and on both sides of Allegheny Mountain in both Virginias, thus the name. I was a one center fire rifle deer hunter for more than 20 years, then I bought my first Pre-64 Model 70 3 years ago and started a small collection. Primarily interested in Winchesters, which I'm hunting with. I'm also a history buff, especially WW2. I'm interested in Lee-Enfields primarily at this point. Trying to educate myself and enjoy different perspectives.
......been involved with black powder shooting and historical reenactment since the early 90's. Through a longtime friend of over 40 years started going to NCOWS and GAF shoots which led to the purchase of an 1873 Trapdoor infantry rifle and a Colt SAA. Which then led to the purchase of an 1898 Krag. Hopefully in a couple weeks, I will finally have some brass to put some bullets together. See how that old antique shoots. Found this forum while looking for information on the old guns. My profile picture is a great uncle on my maternal grandmothers side. Haven't searched out his service record, yet.

Hi, old newbie here, but eager to read and learn.
Literally only here because I saw a guy selling a svt -40 I wanted to see if he still had
First post, from Alabama, own a last resort Type 99 Arisaka also picked up what looks like a sporter’ized version.
Was told it was a prototype mounted on the Japanese aircraft 100% skeptical.
Hoping someone can help. First post and no idea how to start my own thread or post pictures. Many thanks
Hi I am 88 years young, still interested in militaria and firearms and all the interesting threads, what a fountain of knowledge, will tell you about my lee enfields one day soon.
Gidday,
New to this site - am based in Queensland Australia.
Have had a good read of many posts on .303 rifles with plenty of advice
Am the now proud owner of 1945 SMLE ex Police rifle and also a 1945 No 5 Mark 1.
Cheers ...
New to this site, I'm an old, retired guy.
FYI, I am more of a shooter than a collector. :)
I do have a few military surplus firearms I have picked up over the years.
I started hand-loading in 2008, but just recently starting to load for my '42 Kar98k, I hope to use it this year for deer/hog hunting.
Hi Y'all...
As Title sez... Jes an OF check'n in...
Real serious into Mil-Surp mostly from mid '90s to ~2010 or so, til ran outta space and had, as Dennis Kroh of Empire Arms sez to me, 'Looks like you've gone from collector to accumulator...' Seems that I had...
Looked at getting back into Road Rac'n and after disabusing myself of it being possible financially or worth ah hoot relative to what it used to be, found an alternative that was affordable and satisfied my 2nd love with High Performance Driving, to wit: Instructing High Performance Driving... So found that while it didn't pay in most cases they would comp Instructors with track time which for average 2 day event was worth ~$400-$700, so got accepted by a dozen or so orgs and was able til recently to make 12-15 events a year...
While refrained from continuing to load up on yet more 'stuff' with no time to enjoy I've maintained an interest in Mil-Surp and from time to time checked into whatever source was convenient and interesting...
Interest is in a wide selection of Countries, Years, Wars, etc. particularly in anything Swedish, given their ubiquitous quality and attention to detail in production and rearsenalling... ya jes can't hardly find one what ain't in pretty good condition, if not dang near pristine and ALWAYS accurate as it gets in rack grade battle rifles...
In process of divesting of some of the 'stuff' soes to not leave a helluva mess for the SO to have to deal with...
Reckon that bout covers it fer now...

Bonjour,
I'm a franco british collector with too little money and too many dreams. More of a shooter than a collector, but by several strokes of luck and idiocy I have started building an already interesting little collection. Most recently I have picked up a keen interest in Diopter sights and have decided to start sniffing and knowledge related to them.
see you later
I just stumbled across this site, I hope to be able to contribute as much as I glean. I love to shoot, anything, but prefer a good rifle over pistol. And I do love a milsurp firearm!
So howdy, hello, 'sup and pleased to be met!
Until today, I had never even held an enfield. Does the bolt always pop back when opened?
Now that I am retired, I need some new toys
New to the group looking to find some interesting military items. veteran of The Marine Corp an Army.
New Member and new 07 FFL, I purchase military surplus rifles and repair them for resell. Currently looking for a barrel for a 1908 DWM Brazilian mauser 7x57. I'd also like to get some leads on importers that sell wholesale to small shops.
