For those who likes a Swiss Gewehr 96/11

Hello,

in a former thread i wrote i want to restore a Schmidt-Rubin Gewehr 96/11.
Now i am ready with that rifle. Here a few pics.

Gunner, if that is the 96/11 that is now landing everything in the bull, be careful. The old saying goes: do not pull up the plants to see how the roots are going.

I would NOT soak the stock to get out dents. Just think: it's has about a century to stabilize. And it is a very long stock. It will only take a tiny amount of warping to send the grouping right off again. If it is a good shooter, and you want to keep it that way, do not soak the wood. Ever.
Also, If you dismantle it, note the position of the screw heads before moving them. That will at least help you to get roughly the same screw torque when you reassemble it.

Patrick, yes that is the rifle. No fear i let the dings in the stock it`s a part of her history. I cleaned it carefuly and added two thin layers of BLO and the 3 part of each stockwax on it. Thank you for the advice.

Well I might, if I could read them.
Could you please decipher and post the wording?

From the position, I would expect a place name or (maybe) organization name.
Take a look on the butt just behind the tang. Is there a 2-letter stamp there. This would be a canton arsenal stamp , e.g. BE for Bern or BL for Basel. If we knew that, it might be possible to identify the place.

Hello Patrick,
the word is THURBAL. There is no other letter than a "B" on it. Hope this helps a little.

Well, that's got me beaten. I can't find THURBAL as a place name OR a family name. I suppose it could conceivably be some kind of abbreviation, but the Swiss shooter I could ask is on holiday, so I can't help any more at the moment.

to find out a rifles history is sometimes heavy stuff. If you think thats easy they have all wrote down, than you got a rifle wich is not reported. But it`s fine that you make any efforts to help me . Thank you !

Thr trouble with THURBAL is that it is annoyingly close to THURGAU - the only canton name that fits. THUR.A. PLease check the B and L again.
