With which ship did it go down? I have never seen a rifle so rusted except for one that was buried for about 70 years.

Years ago in the back of an auction catalog was a Winchester Lee 6mm cataloged as having light pitting over the entire rifle. I looked it up and sure enough it was from the USS Maine, I bid less than $200 so as not to call attention to the rifle and got it for $135. IT PAYS TO DO THE RESEARCH!
