I've been so preoccupied with AKs, pistols and ARs lately....
reaching way back and pulling out the old Inland sure is nice once in awhile - a real steel and walnut piece of American industrial artistry that has actually been there. Kind of like calling on an old friend.
Sorta like coming Home after a long trip.

i can relate, im not much of an AR or AK fan, but have picked some up as an investment sort of thing, with the leader we have right now, it seems like a good idea.
i still love the old trusted rifles with history..they make me feel all warm and fuzzy.
that feel of wood in your hands, your finger on the safety, just waiting to see what comes up. The AR feels like you are holding a car part; and the sights suck out loud, got to jam your head up to see them, find them. The carbine comes up naturally like that Model 12, and the sights are right there. The Garand is the same, but heavier.
Guess I'm old school... I've just always preferred the feel of American walnut against my cheek when taking aim.
I agree. Walnut and metal just go together. The carbine will always be my favorite, probably going back to shooting my cousin's DCM one in the early 60s, and my dad and uncles carrying them in the Pacific. It is reliable, sleek, light, and handy. It feels "right."
I carried an M16 in the service and occasionally later in LE. I am more of an AK guy than AR, though. To go with my carbine, I do have an AK, though because of my bad shoulder, i just traded the 7.62x39 for a .223 Saiga that I restored to pistol grip configuration. It uses steel Galil magazines. That said, while I appreciate the AK and it's unbelievable reliability, I don't love it like the Carbine. I only have one of each, and a 10-22 I have had for almost 40 years along with a Glock 19 I carried as a duty weapon for years, that is my armory. If I could afford to collect guns, however, they would be carbines.
Still would like to get an Erma 22 Carbine, but life still gets in the way at the moment.
Like many others, I bought an AK before the present administration took over. It has been utterly reliable through several thousand rounds. The sights are hard to see for my eyes, so I bought a scope and mount to put on the side rail. By the time you add a fully loaded 30 rd clip it's weighty. A lot of folks hang other accessories off theirs as well. When you lay these "assault" weapons down and pick up the carbine the difference is night and day. You begin to fully appreciate the ease of carry, the natural pointing characteristics, the ergonomics, and the wonderful feeling of wood and steel.
In a SHTF situation you think about what guns to use. I have a scoped Tikka .308 bolt that shoots lights out and is the most accurate weapon I own. This one would definitely be with me. I would also want a light weight, easy to carry weapon for close in battle. My late war Winchester carbine would trump the AK in this situation hands down. Finally I would also want a light weight handgun, preferrably my 1911 aluminum frame .45.
Yes I love my AK, but it will never take the place of my carbines.
The light weight, handiness, and close up power (especially with 110 JSPs) are definitely what makes the carbine great. That's why I use it as my house/farm weapon. I agree with you about AK sight. I thought of replacing my AK rear with a peep.
I have never been a fan of tacticool googas, even on M16 platform. My favorite M16 was an Xm177 I had on the SO, but with an 11.5 inch barrel, it was not much ahead of the good old carbine! So many guys add 5 pounds of junk (fore grips, lasers, flashlights, scopes, red dots, grips) on a 7 or 8 pound rifle! If I wanted to carry that much weight I would cary an FN FAL or M1A!
M1 carbines make nice teddy bears to snuggle with too.
