Parts were available. Repros were fairly easy to build. The middle band was unique.
Most of those seen for sale are fakes. If you're paying a "premium" price, I would expect some "premium" proof it is real.

Springfield Air Service rifles exist outside the Springfield Armory museum. But, they are extremely rare. Real ones exist in a fairly tight serial range in the S/N 800000 range. They were made in a single batch on a single order.
I recommend that your purchase a copy of Brophy's book and read carefully. That's a very small investment compared to the one you're about to make.

If I remember correctly, according to Pershing's cablegrams, some Springfields were cut down in France for Air Service. I don't recall if a quantity was mentioned.
