My First Enfield No. 4 Mk1

Today I bought a No.4 Mk1 Enfeild. I dont know much about these rifles. The left side of the receiver has 3 tapped holes and the ejector screw is missing. The receiver band is marked ROF 43 Serial# W29*** with a upper case A at the bottom on the right side is the number 22. The number on the bolt matches the number on the reciever band. It looks as if there was a repair done at the top of the reciever on each side of the notch for the stripper clip. There is no sling swivel on the front did this attach to one of the bands? Bore looks good. Thanks Fishn

You probably already know this, but ROF 43 stands for Royal Ordnance Factory 43 (1943 ). The #4 enfield is a wonderful bolt rifle. IMHO the very best #4's were made in Canada by Long Branch and the best of those were made post WW ll.

Probably another "F" somewhere on the butt socket, but it may be only a partial or faint marking. ROF (F)-Fazackerly. It LOOKS like a Fazackerly, and the "A" after the S/N is most common on these rifles.

I'm guessing the extra holes were for some sort of aftermarket or homebuilt scope mount.

Front swivel would go on the band that's about half-way along the fore stock.

The "2" as the first digit in the S/N is another Fazackerly identifier.

Thank You. I did not know for sure what the stampings were. I mostly collect Mausers. I ordered the ejector screw, front sling swivel and a sling from Numerich today. If I scope it which I probably will I will most likely use the ATI mount. Not too shure how well I can do with the battle sight. I see one of the other pictures posted shows the same welded spot on the top of the receiver does anyone know what that was for? Thanks again. Fishn

The welding to the top of the receiver is where the joint between the body and a loose bridge charger guide has been drilled out and filled with weld. Quite common. The sort of thing we'd do every day. But usually we'd make a slightly better job. But at least it's been done

I saw a Parker-Hale Mount on e-bay looks like the hole pattern matched. Went for over $100 wow.

Well, there's no getting rid of the holes, really. It might be best just to keep an eye out for a better deal on a mount. Parker Hale made some good stuff, and there's no sense adding more holes for another type mount. Realistically, this rifle's a shooter, and that's not a bad thing! That ugly old mismatched rifle of mine pictured above shoots well and is more enjoyable than many other more "collectible" rifles. Enjoy it for what it is, or if it fails to meet expectations, use it to trade for something "better". HOWEVER, if you grow to enjoy Enfields as much as I, then you will probably miss your "first Enfield" ,warts and all, IF you do part with it!

ETA, Your photos are appreciated as well- often little things in these pictures can answer other questions many moons in the future- sometimes regarding things unexpected.

I am working now on fabricatiog a mount to utilize the existing holes. today I borrowed time on a milling machine and got a good start on a billet of scrap 4140 that I had scrounged several years ago.. All of the holes are in place and the rough machine work done. I am trying to find a picatinny rail section. wich I will attach to the homemade base. I will post pictues when finished. fishn

Here is an update on my post from last month. My rifle already had 3 holes drilled and tapped into the reciever when I bought it. This is the scope mount that I made to use the existing holes. It is rock solid, but I havent had a chance to test on the range yet.
