Mystery Bag, possibly from WWI

I picked this bag up at a yard sale last summer for 25 cents but have no idea what it was for or if it is complete. The loops look like they could hook onto a belt or webbing or be used for a strap. I do not think it is a gas mask bag as it is too narrow. I did what checking I could on the web but came up empty.

I'm guessing the PI S5 is a unit id although the S5 could be an officer's staff position technically.

It's in pretty nice shape, doesn't smell like mold or anything either. I'm hoping it has something to do with the US infantry in WWI and I can display it with my 1917 but if not, no big deal.

Looks like a map pouch to me.

It is just a bit smaller than the current version of the map case. It does not have anything in it for pencils or pens like today's version. It is almost too small to be anything else. You can't get a lot in it.

That may well be the case in point. Just my thoughts on the quote.

My opinion on the bag, ( and that is all there is to it ), is that the bag may well be a "grenade bag". I have read that term many times in literature, and the bag looks like it would handle several of them. Men weren't, as individuals, "issued" more than a few for combat. Seems like that many would fit in that bag easily.

It's funny, you search for certain words and you come up empty but have the exact combination and have all sorts of results.

It does indeed appear to be a grenade bag from World War I. I found at least 5 of them using that term, one which has the same painted numbers on it only it is P5 S5. It is in the best condition of those that I saw photos of but is missing a shoulder strap.

They take an ungodly amount of time to get to you. Don't worry, it'll happen eventually.

I did finally get approval about 4 days ago but as I now know what the bag is, I no longer have a need to ask the question.

If you still go through the website you'll find some facinating stuff.
