RMC I cut Highwood repair

This stock came into Frank's Stock Sickbay a couple of weeks ago.
It is a collector grade stock. First four pics are the "good", next five are the "bad" and the "ugly".
It had a crude patch in the left rail and was roughed out for an M2. With a rifle in the stock there was a gap from near the recoil plate almost the handgaurd.
My customer wants me to clean up the ugly patch and fill in the gap so it will look good with the rifle in it. I plan on adding pics as I complete the project.
First step is removing the ugly patch. Then make a new patch that comes close to matching the grain.

I have a question for you Frank; Do you have or thought of buying a small milling machine[nice ones around $1000]. I have alway thought one would be nice for gun repair. Just think of the time saved on repairing stocks! Anyway, you do great work and I haven't forgot about having you look at my M1a1 stock. GK

GK, thanks for the compliment.
I don't have a milling machine. Sometimes when I have been sanding a patch for along time I think it would be a good tool to have.
I'll have to look into it.

And yes, I would use a milling machine. I have used one many times for stock repair on MANY rifles... it does cut down on time!

Well here is some progress on the HW I cut RMC with the outstanding cartouche.
First pic is of the area for the new patch cleaned up and with the pins the patch will sit on, for strength.
Next is with the new patch.:thup:
Last two show the gap that will be filled.

Hi Frank,

Yes, super work.

I bought a Micro-mill/drill from Harbor Freight for $260 a few years ago. I don't see it listed in their catalogue anymore. However, they do carry a Mini-mill at $499. I use my micro to do M1 carbine stock work, and believe me, you can get some very precise cuts in the stock and on patches (even thought it's Asian manufacturer).
