Strange painting on m2 stock

You'd have to ask the unit that did it. Those went all over the world and many foreign countries had them...probably a rack number and a segregation color. They probably had scads of them...

Not a US marking. Obviously an import, at least the stock is - meaning as Jim said we gave them to another country, then later a private importer bought them and imported them for sale in the USA.

this stock has no maker markings, would it be a no-no to use this stock, on a refinished matching inland build with no import marks? I have a almost mint "as issued" carbine, kind of like the ratty look also..... this forum is great, lots of knowledge... thanks guys

No stock makers marking? Are you sure there's nothing under paint?

As Jim said remove the paint. I would suggest something like Formbys furniture stripper. It will not hurt the wood and you may very well be surprised what is under the paint. Also look in the sling well for any letters or numbers there.

Absolutely, a good liquid stripper liberally applied and allowed to work. Maybe a second try as well. Then after a good rinse and drying...maybe something will appear.

I was thinking of leaving it like it was, kind of digging the look......what do you guys think of that? im trying to figure out if I am going to buy this stock for my build, or go for the pristine look...thanks

I bought one that looked just like that. Or, at least, very similar.
They are Korean rack numbers. Yeah, why wouldn't they use Korean characters? I don't know. But, after living in Korea I do recognize the way they print numbers and I am pretty sure that yours is from Korea also. I stripped mine and linseed oiled it. It came out pretty nice.
