Latest addition to the workshop...

Have been looking for some time for an old small lathe just for little jobs etc although would of gone for a Myford if I could find one for a reasonable price, some that I have seen were past there shelf life and the amout of work needed to get them back to a reasonable condition the sums never added up....

So whilst searching I stumbled upon an advert on gumtree, when I phoned the guy he was spot on and honest enough and even tried to put me off as It was over 230 miles away..... with a few more questions the deal was done for a very reasonable amount..... it was for the two lathes, that was one deal done and another in the pipeline as there was another lathe I was looking at not far away from this one it made sense to to get this also as it need a repair and would fix this and move it on and hopefully get enough to cover the initial cost and cover my fuel.....

So the lathes I,m keeping are Winfield Mk3's, the good one or complete one needed the headstock swapping as there was a crack on the forward bearing housing.....

The plan is to strip clean and rebuild plus a coat of paint, will add a few extras at some point. I,m hoping to do a step by step guide that may be of help to some in the future, I may even get a book out out of it.......

Mine's just a bit bigger and a bunch newer. I would have taken an older model that was much bigger, but I don't have facilities to house it...too bad. That one's going to give you some fun re-building, but that's right up your alley so...

Looks a lot like a Drummond, but then quite a few probably did.

There was an Armourers shop recently that was under my wing - in theory but not in practice - that had an old belt drive lathe. It had seen better days and was replaced by a new Chinese made Axminster that was a supposedly more versatile lathe. Disposal of the old 1950's English made lathe was '....under local instrucyions' which meant that Taff the Turner asked me for it. Which I said he could have.

Within 2 months he had used the new lathe to machine new bearings, bushes, shafts and even a leadscrew from the various high quality brass, bronze and steels from the used target tank spares! Dunked in the boiling trichlorethylene vapour tank, through the bead blasting cabinet and then the paint shop and it came back like new. A few evenings assembling it and it is now on his bench at work.

Great to see these true fitters at work........

A little sequence to this........ Taff''s 'real' boss was was based afar only used to come around and call in when he was passing (hence they were under my wing.....). I phoned him and said that before he did Taff's annual appraisal/report, he should call in and have a look as this work he'd done on the old Winfield lathe inmstead of assessing him based on heresay, me, etc etc. He did. Taff got a brilliant annual report - and he still doesn't know why! Nice bloke

The old ones were made to be repaired and rebuilt. Mine's Chinese or Asian anywayzzz, unfortunately. At least I have it...

The other added bonus is that a lot of the old Lathes in the UK were very similar to each other, I,m quite sure some of the bits on the Winfield have been replaced with or are Myford parts, the other thing in the UK some makes were a direct copy of the American made lathes, Atlas, South bend .... The Boxford and Smart and Brown all come from the South Bend stable, the other lathe I picked up is a Sphere which is a direct copy or even a re badged Atlas 10F......

Interesting you mention The Chinese one you have, these come in to the UK and then sold under the name of whatever company buys them, so the Re Badge thing has been going on for some time in the UK.....

As you say at least you have one and I,m sure it will be ok for the amount you use. My mate bought one of the small Chinese Milling machines (Axminster) said its excellent, lathe wise he runs a Myford all in a 6x4 shed.

Thats the trouble when some are looking for a lathe, biggest factor is space and then what its going to be used for..... I,ve seen it many a time in the last few months looking at adverts "used a few times but need the space"

Best place for a small lathe like the Boxfords and Myfords - and the Winfield is bolted onto a susbtantial tea trolly. Easy to move around and store away into a corner somewhere when not in use. Or push into a natural light space when the weather is good. No chance of that here at the moment......... rain, dark, damp........

Only problem I found was turning a large lump of eccentric cast iron!

Agreed, there's a company here called KMS which stands for Korean made Sh*t...and they do the re-badge thing regularly. Whatever's cheapest and put their own label on it. Yes, I have mine on a large box made of planking, big castors on it and roll it out into my bench area for work.
