I remember seeing that photo--was it a gas trap Garand the RIA had a year ago or so? Very nice.
Ed
Yes RIA
very rare accessory and unique only to the gas trap M1 Rifle. Designed for winter service
IIRC one turned up in Australia.
It appears to me as if the gas system and 'protector' are painted, not parked.
Ed
Stainless steel. Can't Parkerize stainless.
The original finish for the M1 gas system was 'japan black' a lacquer paint with rust preventive properties. It didn't hold up to cleaning solvents, thus the shiny gas cylinders.
I have been assembling pictures of Gas Trap cylinders for several years for an eventual article on finish. Those found today with original finish are plum brown, but I'm convinced they were black when made and only age to brown because of exposure to light. Protected areas like the top under the barrel show black. This one is on my totally original 1684. First photo is artificial light, second is bright sun. It's also possible that the brown is a primer coat and the black has worn or flaked off.

So what does this accessory do? Prevent muzzle blast from melting snow on the edge of a foxhole?
