Can anyone tell me if poor case ejection is common on the L39A1. Mine just doesn't seem to get the fired case clear unless i operate the bolt faster than i would my No4. Its a standard rifle with a PH5C sight fitted.

Check the ejector to make sure it isn't chipped or broken. Also check the spring.
In fact, do you have an Enfield 7.62mm mag in it, or something else?
If it's only got a .303 mag (as most do) then it won't, very well, and if only a .303 extractor (unlikely unless someone's swapped it) it's even worse.
I have a 7.62 Magazine fitted, it also has the 19T stamped bolt head. Hopefully it hasn't been messed with as it's been in military use until i bought it.
Are the cases sticking, or just poor ejector throw?
Have you tries different types of ammunition?
If yes, does it do it with all of them?
What are you using at the moment?
7.62 magazine, but which sort? Enfield, Sterling or Ishapore?
If it has the Enfield magazine, I'd be checking to see if the ejector tab is still attached to the left rear magazine lip. After that, that the extractor is a 7.62 one, and lastly that the extractor spring is strong.
I shall do the checks. Thanks

My issue is poor ejection throw once extraction is completed, I have a CR141A magazine and the extractor appears intact with a strong spring. Looking at the picture, the ejector screw looks too short and doesn't protrude as it's the forward mounting screw for the ph5c sight.
The screw does not come into play on the 7.62. The tab on the rear of the magazine performs this function. The mag must set up high enough in the mag well for the tab to engage the spent cartridge.
Remove your mag (CR141A is a correct mag) and check for a damaged tab. If tab is OK then examine the mag well to see if there are relief cuts fore and aft and on each side of the feed rails. Peter Laidler has dwg either on this site or Skenerton's Enfield book showing these details. Your L39 may not have these if it was originally outfitted with a 303 mag (set up for single shot. Jamming a 7.62 mag in an unprepared well results in the symptoms you're describing. My experience. Ron(Canada).
