what's the dye or stain used to give a stock the salty redish tint that old usgi stocks have?

The color comes naturally from aging of the original oil finish. It is hard to duplicate exactly, but you can try staining the wood with Chestnut Ridge Military Walnut Stain Military Walnut Stain or Fiebing's Dark Brown Leather Dye Dyes. I recently tried a dye based on Fiebing's from Dixie Gun Works, Dixie Antique Stain Dixie Gun Works muzzleloading, blackpowder and rare antique gun supplies. and it looks good, darker than Chestnut Ridge but lighter than Fiebing's Dark Brown.
"Venitian red". Just a little will do you.
You will probably find that a bit of experimenting will be required, as each piece of wood & stock coloration is a little bit different from others...good luck!:)

Goo, I use the med brown leather dye and thin it with alcohol. It works great and dries very fast. Just go slow, as it is hard to get lighter once it's on. You can always add more coats. And, it goes through BLO finishes if you want to darken up a rifle that is already rubbed down.

Prior to WWI, Springfield used logwood stain on its stocks, giving them the reddish color we see on original Krag and old M1903 stocks. This is the same color we see on old pianos and old furniture. During WWI, that stain, which came from Central America, was difficult to obtain and expensive. So, Springfield went to plain oil stain and never went back. Apparently, the M1917 contractors had or obtained a supply of logwood or a simliar stain, because those rifle stocks have a reddish color.

If I want a lot of control of the color I will let one coat of Tung Oil finish cure first and then use the dye. It allows me to go back and pick up some dye with an alcohol moistened paper towel if I want.
