Ever had a bullet go by your head?

I have now, and it's freaking scary.
Around 5 Saturday afternoon I was sitting in my stand in the woods about 16' off the ground. I wanted to try and record the hunt, so I was messing with my camera settings when I heard a ziiiip and BOOM! It was surreal, I could hear the bullet and the leaves/ limbs it was hitting. It was close enough that the camera captured the sound of the bullet, and the audio pickup on this camera is not very good. I got my stuff together and got down and went home. Best I can tell is that it was a guy that hunts an adjacent property that has a stand through the woods on the other side of a field about 500 yards away. I heard his 4 wheeler about 15 minutes prior as he headed to the stand. All i can figure is that he was on the ground at the base of his stand and a deer came out toward the middle of the field, which has a slightly higher elevation, and he shot at it and missed and the bullet had an upward trajectory. Either that or it was a Negligent Discharge or maybe a ricochet. Scary either way as it had to go through more than 200 yards of solid woods to get to me, but it did. I'm definitely going to have a word with this guy, and let him know what happened.

Glad your ok and weren't hurt, except for some possible pants soiling .. :madsmile:

Just my opinion, but you should report the incident, as it was poor situational awareness on his part and it could happen again if he exhibits the same kind of bad judgment sometime in the future. :cheers:

No bullets but two incidents with shotguns. One was a guy stalking my dad and I as we called Turkey's. He came right up on us about 20 yards away with his gun up and right on us. The other was while hunting pheasants in corn and I as hit by shotgun pellets which were mostly expended.

Ah, that’s one of the dangers of hunting with city folk. They pay no attention to what’s behind the birds they are shooting at.

Had an AD with my 12 gauge semi auto; cycling reloads by loading up, safety on, pushing the barrel down to mimic cycling. one round came out the ejection port and jammed with another on the lifter underneath I lent over with the muzzle about 4" away from my left temple pulled the jam out the bolt slammed shut and the weapon fired with No.6 shot small hole in the ceiling 6" hole in the tin roof! Never did that again 1 at a time there after a very close squeak.

#11 Vincent I have passed up oodles of shots because A) The set up was not right if I did miss with structures in the background 000's yds + away but still no good or B) The animal had too much foliage in front or covering their vitals which may deflect the bullet resulting in a ricochet or a wounded animal involving a long stalk tracking it and suffering for that animal.
Even the prey we hunt deserves dignity.

Lack of experience

It is illegal to stalk Turkey's in PA, probably for that very reason as that is the season that the most people get shot. He evidently thought we were turkeys and was trying to sneak up on them. The trouble is both of us heard him coming and also thought it was a turkey so we were both in position to shoot when he came over the hill. Didn't have the safety's off but it was a scary situation. That was the last time I went spring turkey hunting.

It was good Aragorn that nothing happened to anyone and for him being inexperienced crashing through the bush like a bulldozer shows lack of that, it also showed your experience by not removing the safeties until the target had been properly identified. A good thing for him as he had twice the trouble facing him so had a good shock factor and teaching him that all is not what it seems to be.
Well done anyway on your emulation of a turkey attracting a turkey!!!! Glad your none the worse for wear over your experience.

because of people like these to stalk Turkey's illegal in PA

In PA now you have to put a florescent yellow band on the tree @ around 5 feet high that you are hunting from in turkey season, just to avoid that issue.

Of course it is not good, but I know a few fellow who are excellent turkey callers who will, if some chap drives up in the early afternoon and noisily stakes a hunting position within earshot near a road, will play with them by responding to their calls. Some of the stories are kind of funny, though I cannot recall all the details, other than they will imitate a ****ed off male bird.

Personally if I were going to hunt turkey I would simply go outside and blast away at the large herds that came around my house in the fall, must be some grubs they like in my crappy lawn. They congregate right on my 50 yard range, so I even have a backstop.

Not all Turkeys in the woods have feathers!

After their first day out in the woods they stopped at a tavern for a bite to eat and as they sat there eating a table of nearby deer hunters (probably from Detroit) (In his words not mine) who were well oiled and getting loud as one asked if anyone had seen any and one guy says I took a couple of sound shots. My friends friend , his name was George, got up and approached asking where they were hunting that day. And Mr. sound Shots says off by such and such road. George looked at him and said you son of a b.... that was me you shot at and busted his nose. My friend said they weren't even within 20 miles of where the guy said he was. But on the other hand what or who did make that sound that idiot shot at?

Many years ago I had a good friend that sold deer tags. He showed me a list of people that were prohibited from being issued licenses and why not. The one I'll always remember was a guy who was busted for deer hunting for shooting at "deer sounds". The guy was really old and was legally blind! I kinda quit hunting after that. That and the numerous times I''ve had shot falling all around me.

I guess that's why we try to teach young people the safe use of firearms. When I was a boy our right of passage was to go hunting on Thanksgiving Day with the men and older boys. Many a young lad walked back with an empty shotgun and a lump on their head. Only one that I know of walked back without the shotgun in hand and he never went again. Uncles and Dad's were not shy of correcting the mishandling of said firearm. And no I never got thumped.

Passed some people packing up from hunting today in a field near some woods while I was driving... as I started to go by I noticed one sweeping the party with his rifle, then he immediately aimed it across the road where I was driving! Furious to say the least. Really disappointing that one appeared to be a child/young teen with them. Like car safety, if you don't practice gun safety around your kids when they are young they are going to have bad habits that could themselves or someone hurt.

Many have the habit of glassing with their scope instead of a pair of binos...

But the smarter ones don't have their finger on the trigger

You can't tell which of them is glassing you when you look through binos and see them...one can only hope.

Yes...and it's a FHS !!!....also been Rained on a few times during Dove Season at the Ranch.

There is a state wildlife area less than four miles from where I grew up in north central Ohio and every year they stock young pheasants. I remember my first hunt there at 12. We parked on the access road got out and readied the dogs. As we started down and across the first field we had several birds go up. That's when the clowns on the road above us started shooting over our heads at the birds we just kicked up. I've seen it happen again and again as I continued to hunt that place growing up.

Back home on driven pheasant shoots, I started off as a beater. As birds were shot coming towards the guns, it was very common for the spent shot to rain down on us. No-one bothered about it. we just didn't look up to See it coming down!

Grand days those, back in the early 70's. The od bloke got sent home, but most were brought up right. "A Father's advice" was instilled in most before they ever took up the gun. Even as a kid, I could never actually aim my cap-gun at anyone when playing Cowboys and Indians!................used to aim wide. Just the way we were brought up.

One last question about the thread. Do mortar shells and AK 47 small arms fire count?

Not had a bullet wiz past but used to stand by the pond and fire my .22 as near vertical as possible and wait for the bullet to drop in the water never got it closer than a few dozen meters.

I did have a Chinese 107mm Rocket land about 30 feet away while in Al Amara in Iraq, picked up a piece from the fuse end still burning hot. A very nasty piece of steel. Ill post a photo up, it's pure evil.
