longbranch sniper build with modern scope. the purists are screaming..........

ok....

this was the first enfield i ever bought, payed 250 at a pawn shop. little did i know at the time it would launch my love of enfields.

it is a no 4 mk I 1943 longbranch.

this is what we started with...crap scope, crap mount and paint all over with crap stock..
unbelievably with that scope and mount , it is a good shooter.

first thing to do was to restore it to it's rightful look.
so i ordered some parts for brian at BDL and he hooked me up with all the right parts to bring this bad boy back to life. he alos helped me find part for my no 4 mk2 build but that is another thread.




i plan to put a scope mount on it with a vortex 1-4x24 Viper PST 30mm Rifle Scope
it has the no 32 look.

here is the mount i ordered. for a no drill mount , this is the best one i found even has rough 300 yard battle sights.

with loctite this mount is going no where with how it mounts to the no 4 receiver.


then i ordered a repo T sniper cheek rest for the butt stock to give it the T look. i plan to glass bed the receiver.

I'm sure the purists are screaming a bit, but the realists are just rolling their eyes skywards and grimmacing Mr Bungle. Floating barrel on a .303" rifle definately ain't not going to give you a sniper rifle or anything even closely associated with accuracy. And a telescope don't make an inaccurate rifle accurate. Make it an accurate rifle first

It's a bit like having a mickey mouse watch....... You don't have to have a £3000 Omega to tell the time, but if you DO want to tell the time, don't get a mickey mouse either! Like they say....., good to look at but not much good if you need to tell the time!

not to disagree but this rifle was doing 3 inch groupings at 400 yards with that crap scope and stock. 303's are not the most accurate rifles in the world. this i know. but i want a modern scope on this rifle. mil/mil. the 303 has a drop rate just like every round. just a matter of refining loads and collecting the data. there should be no reason why this rifle should not do 800 yards. i have a 308 remmy with after market stock, glass bedding , trigger and mag well that shoots like a dream after data was collected and the round load was refined.

like most of my weapons. it is a toy to see how far i can shoot it and hit a target. i am not a sniper nor do i pretend to be. but i love when old rifles out shoot the guy with the 3000 dollar SCAR at the range......

Peter, why do you say a free float 303 won't shoot accurately? Are these old girls capable of pin point accuracy?

I thought 1¼ inch 10 shot groups with my free floated, No4 barreled LMLE was pretty good given that I did nothing to accurise the ammo. I cannot swear on the the accuracy of my free floated, rust textured two-groove No4 but on brief tests in the field it would shoot almost touching groups out to approximately 200 yds (as I say, I can't swear on it - haven't done the proper 10 shot groups with it. I didn't feel the need as it never missed anything. If I aimed carefully at a spot I hit it). My free floated 25-303 SMLE shoots sub-MOA at 183 m. I built a SMLE for a buddy (gunsmith fitted a new barrel and scope base) and that too, while only a 2 MOA rifle did that with any ammo it was fed (there must have been some POI shift but not enough to notice in the field. I never did group it at longer ranges so maybe the groups dampened down. We were only shooting rocks on a hill at distances over 150 m and hitting the centres. So, My experiences as limited as they are have been that Lee Enfield's don't need full bedding and are in fact quite accurate hunting rifles.

mrbungle is saying he got 3 inch groups at 400 yds, that's in keeping with what I was getting. Not 1000 yds tennis ball accuracy but good hunting accuracy.

That mount was made 15 minutes from me, I met the guys and they are very good guys to deal with.It is the best alternative as it still is set for a 300 yard battle site. The last bracket just went for over $600. yikes. I have pictures with a weaver K3 if you want to see it mounted...

Awesome. from comparing it to my other enfield sites . I thought it looked like a 300 yard sight. Tell those guys i am as happy as can be with their sight. Yes please post a pic.

Good question 303guy and the idea of standard format free floating .303 barrels and accuracy have been aired on this site in some depth previously. If I just say that all a thin barrel is, is a tube or a cylindrical tuning fork in relation to its harmonic properties. And the bullet doesn't give a toss about what has happened or is happening where it's already passed. The only thing that can affect it up the bore is what is happening ahead of it. And guess what's happening up ahead of the bore......... Yep, vibration and plenty of it! The best thing to cure this vibration is to damp it down in a controlled manner. Are things fitting into place now............ ? Are you thinking of a muzzle bearing.......?

I hear all about the accuracy of free floating barrels - sometimes listening/reading with eyes as wide as soup plates, mouth agog! But I step back and just ask myself, as others might, this pertinent question......

If accuracy like this could be obtained with all these super-duper san-fandanglio methods of fitting up fore-ends which wera all exhaustively tried, trialled and tested and the results detailed and published, then WHY was the fitting of the fore-end on the No4 rifle NEVER relaxed (actually, it was, once for a short period during the war to allow for the dearth of good timber). And another aside question too......... Why was the fitting of the accurate No4T forened NEVER, ever relaxed.

Just a few points to ponder

PS. Please don't take every word of this as scientifically correct as it's not but I've skimped over things to make it short and sharp but to the point.

Someone ought to ask me about that side mounted telescopic sight mount next. Don't forget to mention clock and anti clockwise moments/torque too..........

not be sarcastic. it is true. i value your opinion on these rifles. one of the reasons i want the wood and hardware back was the barrel tension at the fore end. now do you think bedding the action will help?

i read a an article were a guy did that on a NO 4 t replica and he said it helps a lot with accuracy.

Today i own 6 rifle , all No.4 Long Branch made, five Groove barrel in good shape, low headspace, tight bore, correctly bedded.

I have tried many times to shoot witha free barrel , always had bad results. That's my 2 cent.

Mr B: Personally I only undertake repairs or restorations to original military standards as guided by Capt. Laidler and other experts on the Forum. These experts have repeatedly stated that no accurizing techniques have been found by the military to enhance accuracy beyond the standard fitment. Pure target shooters have a different perspective and have tried many things. You might want to buy the book on accurizing by Forum member RJW who concisely summarizes the options (including "bedding"). He also points out that MOA precision is rarely achieved even with heavily modified rifles (unless I misunderstood) while you've already exceeded that goal with your free floating sporter................

Here in NZ ive talked to several "old enfield" hands, they seem pretty forthright that centre bedding is the way to go for the no4 for prone range work, so really 300m and outwards. It is however a lot of extra work so Im following Peter's advice and doing the std no4 thing for a std stock in the first instance. I aim to aquire another forend at some point and just experiment for the fun of it :madsmile: , std v modded see what I end up with, next winter's project I suspect.

I have it as a download, I have found it well worth reading if only for the general background on the non-war history of these fine old rifles, I am enjoying it greatly, this month's read for me. The price was also pretty reasonable around 19US.

mrbungle, I'm very interested to hear how your rifle shoots shoots after full original bedding. It's looking real good. The No4 is the finest looking military rifle ever in my opinion and that side mount scope base is just dandy and requires no holes drilled right? That is the cartridge eject screw hole that's being used isn't it?

ssj, how does one get ahold of that download?

What is the expected accuracy of a properly bedded,scoped No4 (as in used for sniper rifles)? Is a 100 or 200m accuracy test enough to show the true accuracy of these rifles? What standard is used, 5 shot or 10 shot?

My accurate No4 as accurate as it was, was sensitive to how it was held. That actually makes it 'inaccurate' in military or even hunting terms. (I've fixed that now by re-bedding it properly).

That 25-303 of mine has the same barrel profile and length as the SMLE. It did have a damping device on the muzzle in the form of a mini-suppressor. Maybe it was pure luck that the barrel harmonics were just right.

The moarunt goes through the sight holes and the ejection hole in the receiver. So no drill mount that is solid.
I zero rifles to 200 yards and if you are getting less than a MOA. You are doing good with milsurp rifles.

Putting the rifle back to original except the mount and scope is the idea.

I was going to glass bed it , but now i am going to bed it to mil spec. The action and barrel is in great shape.

The only fly in the ointment with all this talk of bedding, is this:

ALL of the techniques were developed to extract consistent performance from Mk7 ball.

Not PMC

Not Mk8

Not ANYTHING but issue Mk7 ball; 174gn flat-based bullet driven by good old cordite.

If you have a stash of said "good stuff"; lucky you.

Anything else WILL produce different barrel vibration patterns.

Has anyone ever done a comparison between Mk7 (Cordite "sticks") and Mk7Z (Cooler burning Nitro-Cellulose "granules"). Exactly the same bullet.

I get the impression the full stocked rifle needs to be fully bedded. Is it even possible to free float a full length stocked rifle? Mine are all sporters so no muzzle end contact is possible, only mid-barrel. I did once try upward pressure at mid-barrel but it didn't work so I never tried again. I do have one rifle with a 14½ inch barrel with a Knox Form mounted suppressor tube, currently with no baffles. That rifle rings like a bell - like Peter says, it's a tuning fork. But I digress, this is about restoring or building a No4 T. I am most interested to hear how it will shoot with proper bedding.

Never packed with cork? I always thought they were. Was it only target rifles that were packed then?

Inletting the barrel channel for floating may be easy but bedding the action for free floating is tricky - remember they didn't have epoxy bedding materials like we do. Clamping the action down onto the bedding with the bottom metal is tricky too, even with epoxy bedding. Also, the fore-end has to support the barrel when the bayonet is mounted. Mind you, more modern battle and assault rifles had no barrel support.

Read Peter's articles on stocking up, it's all in there.

Doesn't this document describe free floating the barrel, with the exception of having a centre bedding? Could you do the same thing,with a sporterized stock, that is centre and knox form bed with no top guards ?

Yes it does but you have been selective in what you've chosen to repeat in the Canadian EMER. We have the same relaxation in standards in our EMER but unlike yours, our date is at the other extreme of the No4's life. It was to allow for the dearth of good seasoned wood made during wartime. Your relaxation was to cater for the lack of spare parts AND suitably trained Armourers at the end of the No4's life in Canadian Govt. service (?) in 1991. Likewise, we allowed the same relaxation for the DP rifle too. But NEVER the No4T. Why? Because it NEEDS a muzzle bearing to remain accurate

I selected the text from Part 5 -"Maintenance Under Unusual Conditions: -Section 1-Preparing No 4 Rifles for Competition".

"Section 2 Furniture" specifies repair/replace if the barrel doesn't bear evenly with 2-7 pounds of down pressure, etc- but does again give the caveat that this does not apply to centre bedded rifles. I find this kind of confusing- it does'nt seem like a relaxation, but more like a improvement for target rifles? (not talking about the No4T of course).

BTW The Canadian Rangers are still using the No4 currently, as the government drags its heels on selecting a replacement.

Well all i can say about the top rifle, might have been a good build till you got to the painting part, and just why i have to ask? kind of dropped the ball there,JMO, second where do you get off saying enfields are not accurate, only if you have a shot out overbore barrel maybe, the no1 mkt was the most accurate and sought after to this day of all sniper rifles, and i am getting sub 1.5 inch groups @ 150 meters with this uf 55 irish contract rilfe i use, can shrink those up a lot of i use my handloads, this rifle here is capable of astounding accuracy cant speak for yours.Fultons armoury scope mount.German made scope, very accurate to the 600 meters i have to shoot.Attachment 47194Attachment 47195Attachment 47196Attachment 47197Attachment 47198Attachment 47199 I have several enfields including a mint no5 shirley jungle model, all shoot very well. All i did to above rifle is add the mount and scope, shoots as good as you could ask for any mil surp and better.I do not see the use for a good bored enfield to do anything but maybe scope it when we get tired old eyes like mine but that is just me. Good luck with all that and let us know how it shoots after, im anxious to see it was worth messing with at all.Could be wrong but im no thinking so. Nice mount tho.

and yea i agree a 4 inch group at that range center mass is standard unless you are 1 heck of a sniper and marksman, I can manage on a calm day a few at 600 just under 3.50 and that is with 174 gr bthp mtch bullets.

I am astounded how you can hold and fire a rifle with a telescope that far rearwards. What about eye relief.....? Just where does your head/cheek fit in relation to the butt and even more so, the eye rim of the telescope. Having been well and truly bitten by a recoiling L42 - but only once..... - maybe one of your pals can take a picture ogf you shooting it! Just amazed that's all!!!!!!!

Well maybe if you READ my entire post and looked at the pics you would see it has a 2 inch removable recoil pad for that, the average american GI had much longer arms than the average britt did at the time, And enfields DO NOT KICK HARD LOL. in fact compared to every other bolt action mil surp i own, all like my springfield 06,p17 06, various mosin nagants, and the many 8mm mausers i own, the enfields are quite the pansie as far as recoil goes compared .Puts my eye directly where it needs to be with pad installed,would it hit me in head without the pad ,? most likely, im not dumb enough to try , it works just fine as is and i have pics of me shooting it, i have pics of my 4 ft 10 inch 102 lb wife shooting it, does not have that stout of recoil in comparison to any other milsurp i own. Maybe next time you can read the entire post before barking my friend. And how can ya miss that pad on back plain as day lol??????????? and that is a very expensive vintage German scope my man, great working scope. And hits everything i aim it at with ease.:lol: thats kinda funny actually enfields kick hard lol since when? Nobody was questioning anyones physical and morale stature. The fact was made that the scope looks a little far back and even for an amature as I am it does.
The absolute fact was that a retired veteran armorer whose trade was supplying elite soldiers (snipers)with the tools they need to do their life and death duties has made a legitimate statement. If someone states the term "he wrote the book on that",well he did. Veterans,skilled craftsmen and serious collectors deserve a little more respect. These are the members who at the drop of a hat will assist you with any Milsurp issue. When a member sees a picture or reads a statement ,they want to know the hows and whys for the benefit of all in the forum. The people in the know ask the hard questions for those of us that either don't know or have not enough experience to ask. We appreciate that! The statement was not about recoil it was about using the butt stock effectively with relation to the scope and your line of sight. Enfield sniper rifles have a cheek piece for a reason.

The restoration is very nice,sorry to detract from the oringinal post. Takes a tonne of work to get them back from the brink.

Ill say again you obviously did not read the post or look at the end of the rifle with a tottaly plainly shown 2 inch recoil pad for eye relief, so you asked a pretty dmb ? to me is all, and enfields ,do not kick hard lol. they are pansies compared to most all other mil-surp and commercial bolt rifles.And i am not going to drill holes in my 55 uf irish contract rifle for a wooden cheek piece man that would be a ludicrus thing to do to a fine mint condition rifle. lol @ wrote the book , its not a sniper model i just scoped it man. In support of Peter's fair comment, it must be noted that the post makes no mention of "2 inch ..." and the photo does not show the entire assembly, cutting off before the end.

Looking carefully at the photos, it seems to me that if the front ring was attached to the scope behind the turrets, this would permit the rear ring to be mounted two notches further forward on the rail, and this would remove the large overhang of the scope to the rear. How about it?

Tried that not enough room to move it anymore forwardd, i tried, Rings wont fit the pad makes it work and i did mention the pad at bottom of thread very plainly.And it shoots sub 1.58 or smaller moa at 150 meters , im good with that , someday ill find a german rifle for that scope and replace it , till then the pad works just fine or someday ill find correct rings that fit that scope that are thinner.

Of course i know why i said it prolly hit him in head , my 308 has much stouter recoil than any 303 i ever shot in over 40 yrs but my no5 jungle model will rattle ya teeth with full power loads i download em with 130 grainers to keep from beating my shoulder to death, now those i will admit kick, full size enfields i have done the mad minute drill with , no pad , barely felt it, @ knob creek ky milsurp rifle comps . that Compared to my no5 shirley , its a beast on recoil to fire with full house loads, i only did it a few times till i said enough of this and starting useing smaller bullets 130-150gr with reduced charges, I cannot imagine those tiny burmese guerrila fighters firing those no5s all day ,they were some tough cookies for sure back then , recoil from my no 5 is horrendous with full power loaded hvy bullet rounds. from my number4 MK2, pansie recoil wise. look at the bottom of my first quote with pics clearly says this, ------------- the recoil pad is only because i have very long arms and needed more room for scope without altering rifle,works great for me.Enfields not accurate?

As for telling me - or ANY of us - about firing full-load No5 rifles.......... Jeeeees, Groups of 3 or 4 of us Armourers fired hundreds of them and No4's all day, day in and day out range testing/re-zeroing them after being FTR'd prior to return and put back into Ordnance stocks. AND not even wearing shirts (or just cotton khaki green shirts as was the norn in the tropics). Just rolled up woollen socks on our elbows to prevent what we called 'nappy rash'............

Now that's work!

The rifle shoots just fine for me , all that matters. And what a shame to drill and tap and drill into the stock on a nice enfield, why? get over my rifle and scope dude.

boy, this thread took a life of it's own!!!

right now the rifle is sitting like in the pic above. saving for scope and mounts. selling some of my enfields to build a competition rifle at the moment. but keeping the one above and my T with repro scope.
