M1903 roll call - if you got one, show it!

I shamelessly stole this idea from another forum because it seemed like a good idea and wish I'd thought of it first.

Show off ONE M1903 you own. It can be your first, last, most favorite, most grungy, most beautiful, most correct, least correct -- whatever! No particular ground rules except no more than ONE and it must be one you CURRENTLY own -- no sighing for a RB M1903 in the Springfield Armory museum!! Pictures are not required, but encouraged!:super:

My "choice" is #1266164, which started out in late 1924 as a National Match rifle and was sold to a gentleman in Florida (I have the SRS letter, but too lazy to dig it out!). It has an original Star Gauged October, 1924 barrel. It has a J6 bolt (polished but not serialized), reverse safety and "headless" firing pin. It also has, what I'd guess is a replacement Type B (not Type C). No visible markings on the stock except a single "circle P".

I'd guess the stock and bolt are replacements installed by the original owner. It has seen some use - a ME of slightly over 2, but bore is immaculate.

It's my only one. A 1923 1.2 million with a 9/42 Sedgely (SP) barrel. I like it a lot, but have yet to fire it. I get more garage time than range time these days.

I presume an 03A3 counts (as its the only one of the 1903 family I own). This one is a Remington, made in early '43 and appears to be all original with no re-arsenal markings; however, the stock appears to have been lightly sanded by a previous owner. She's a good shooter though. The first 8 shots with my favorite .30-06 cast load went into 1.7" at 100 yds.

1908 Service Rifle. SRS hit to the Michigan 34? Infantry 1917. Has some WWi upgrades, i.e. added stock reinforcing bolt, etc. But retains most of its original parts. Almost no finish left above the wood, but has beautiful blue below!

I have a Rock Island '03 in the 18k range, that i "sporterized" in the 60's. That was all the rage then, it was later I found out about the case-hardened receivers. If i could wave my magic wand I would put it back as-is, because it was in excellent shape.

I've both an '03 and an '03A3 - both Remingtons. Both are "nice", shoot well, and are solid mixmasters. My favorite (and, yes, I have shot it...privately) is this Springfield '03 LN sporter.

Does your stock seem to have been scraped? I have one that looks similar to yours, maybe it's just the lighting. Is there a Hatcher hole, a 3/16 or so hole drilled into the left front side of the receiver?

I have 9 so far, including my latest, a sporter 1918 vintage 03 I buoght at an auction a few weeks ago. I know it's not an original militarry 03 but it's the sporter I would have built in the 1950s if I could have afforded it. Military barrel, 3x9x32 Bushnel scope, Paul Jaeger side mount, Jaeger adjustable trigger and Bishop stock. Shoots inside an inch with my handloads. It will hopefully get me a deer this fall.

Sorry Lancebear no Hatcher hole. It's a 1906 receiver rebarreled in 1919 and it has a R stamped bolt. Pure mixmaster. There is a real faint cartouche on the left side and the proof P.

Hi everyone, new to the forum. Here's my Springfields. The 03 is a fairly low serial # made in 1911 looks to be origional except I believe the stock has been replaced. The A3 is a Remington with a 1943 date.

Yes, it was. And many years of production before and after. That's why I included it. A lot of folks really don't know what "original finish" parts look like. Here's the cut-off switch from the same rifle.

Just like old Colts, etc., the colors are not durable and get faded and worn in no time. Look back at the cocking piece, notice that the colors aren't visible on the back end and top where they weren't protected.

Thanks to JB and others on helping to educate me on what to pay attention to!!

One day when (if?) I get some time I will take some pics of some USMC rifles for you.

Thanks for the info. Yea I know about the quick wearing off of the case hardened colors. Do have a couple of Smiths and one Colt that do have nearly all of the finish on the triggers and hammers. Beautiful stuff.

I don't want to do anymore hijacking on this thread, but what other '03 parts were CH'ed? Is that info in Brophy's?

First '03 was a very, very Marine rifle. Sure you have seen photos of it. Got two others after, but they don't have as much Marine as the first one. Didn't know a thing about any M1903 at the time and trusted my dealer friends. They would love to have it back. Fat chance. It will remain in the family forever.

Guess I have seen a handful of original rifles but have never seen a trace of case on a single one. That would be a rare bird indeed.

Yea...If you could post some photos of your USMC rifles it would be great. That first one ruined me.

My primary deer rifle-spun from parts in early 2006. RIA NS action, named and serialized by SA. 3-29 SA barrel like new. Boyd's wood. Weaver 2.5K. I had to re-inlet and shape the wood, drill one new hole to accept the Weaver bases, add the Buehler safety, she's still getting new parts from time to time. Sorry to bore, this gun's been around here plenty, but it IS my fave.

Here's my M1903 (sn 928452) that I got from CMP last fall. It's 1918 vintage, the same period of time that my grandfather served in the Fifth Cavalry, which makes it especially interesting to me. With lots of advice and encouragement, especially from John Beard and Mike Collum, I restored it to correct condition (except for the sling). The 4-18 barrel appears to be original to the rifle and has MW of 0.5. At some point in its life, someone sanded or scraped off the cartouches, leaving only a faint remnant of the circle-P behind the trigger guard and a sub-inspector's mark in the cutoff recess.

Whichever VFW had it slathered it in varnish. :bash:

The rifle has been rebuilt at some point - at least refinished. The stock is from an earlier rifle.

There are several items you can use that will nicely remove the varnish.

I had a question about the barrel date on my 03A4. It is a 2 groove Remington dated 8-43. I had posted a question about barrel dates vs. serial numbers a while ago and the consensus was that it is a correct date.

Manufactured in 1918. Re-barreled in 1931. 3 1/2 lb. Trigger pull. Very accurate. Replaced .o6 drift sight with .o8. A pleasure to shoot. It's my favorite rifle after my JCG rifle re-bulit by Mac in Santee.

This is an early Remington 1903 with milled parts and a four groove 12-42 barrel. It appears to be all correct except for a Brown and Sharpe bolt. Receiver has very green parkerizing, barrel is dark gray. Stock has an FJA stamp and a faint crossed cannons overstamped with a Raritan Arsenal stamp. Very good shooter.

I purchased this 03 in 1961, 4-25 barrel date, star guaged barrel, 1,248,4xx ser.#, WL3 bolt, DAL marked stock, scope block on front , and drilled and tapped for a block under rear sight, still enjoy shooting her for almost 50 years. She shoots straight, but my eye's don't LOL

I bought this at a gun shop in New Rochelle, New York in the Fall of 1972 for $125. I added the sight hood and the sling, but otherwise it is as it was when I bought it. I was just 18 years old, and had spent many happy Summer weekends at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome as "ground crew" for the WW1 aircraft collection they flew every Sunday. I collected a WW1 US soldier's uniform and kit, and as soon as I turned 18 my parents let me buy a rifle to go with it.

I got advice from a gun dealer; he lent me his copy of Brophy, so I had an idea what to look for. Even so I ended up with a rifle that is not necessarily accurate for WW1 - the C stock being a major post WW1 improvement. It has the bent bolt, checkered butt plate, and serrated trigger of a 1903A1, and my 18 year old self assumed that with a 10-18 barrel date that it came off the line too late for WW1, and was assembled sometime in the 1920's as an 03A1.

I don't know enough about gun finishes to tell if it has been re-worked; as far as I can see the wear on all the metal parts is very light, the bore is shiny bright with crisp rifling. The only mark I can see on the stock is the S in the cutout for the safety.

After seeing this thread I have been trying to determine what is a "true" M1903A1. This one has a lower SN than the 1.2 to 1.5 million range that usually qualifies. It has no provenance from before I bought it; no DCM paperwork or anything like that. I do not know how to tell if it is a re-stock, re-build, or whatever. If anyone has any advice, I 'd appreciate it!

Beautiful rifle, Radford. However, the Type C stock is a replacement. The rifle would have had a grasping groove stock as manufactured. It would be impossible to say if it was restocked during an overhaul or a previous civilian owner did it. Note the later buttplate, too.

Keep in mind the U.S. Army definition of a M1903A1 is any M1903 with a Type C (or Scant) stock. The typical collector definition is a rifle in the 1.3M to 1.5M range.

I just love those type C stocks. They seem to hold and shoot so much better than the early ones. I especially like the looks of a nice clean one like that one. Too bad about the swap over but that's how it is.

Here is my SA with 11/18 barrel. It has a stock that had a cutout for a Lyman receiver sight, but I filled the cutout and you can barely see it. Great shooter.

I picked up this M1903A1 NM on Gunbroker...thanks for the help, Milsurps....last year. After checking with some folks on this forum, I contacted SRS and a document for the serial number was verified. All the markings, features, etc, jived with my reference books plus the SRS document indicated an original rifle.

I've been posting on Culvers site for a few days getting questions answered about my 1903A4 Remington rifle.

I quess it is my second most favorite rifle now.

My latest addition:

M-1903 RIA serial range 200,000 with bbl 1913.

All original components with the exception of the hand guard and bolt. These two items will be replaced with the correct types.

Bayonet is RIA 1907 dated with shiny blade.

Springfield action, Remington stock, heavily boned, mix of pre and post WW1 parts. This one has been hanging over my desk for the last 15 years. My favorite rifle and wall decoration in the whole house!!

WWIfan, if you were every in a mind to sell the stock, you could make out like a bandit!! Probably could trade it for a really nice grasping groove stock from Springfield and make a fair amount besides!!

Thanks for the comments......not that I'm looking to sell right now, but what would you guess the stock and handguard might be worth?

I have seen really nice RLB GG stocks go for as much as $600 and Remington handguards as much as $100. I admit that was before the economy we have now. You just don't see Remington M1903 GG stocks come up very often.

What a great bunch of rifles and pictures! I have been away from here much too long. As to WWI fan's RLB stock, I would thing $600 might be low, Rick.....it looks stone mint! DuPage is selling the handguards for 100 plus shipping. I know I would give 600 for it in a heartbeat! I'll drag out my SC and post some pics of it. Regards, Rick.

I purchased this rifle years ago from a retired gentleman who worked at the Rariton Depot in New Jersey. He picked this rifle out and had the original DD and DA forms for purchase and transfer......just look what he paid for it. It went through Rock Island at one time and I had to replace the bolt body and butt plate to make it all SC. Regards, Rick.

Beautiful grain in the stock! I also note the lightening grooves in the FRSB.

the stock has a really pretty grain I think it is all original the fit and finnish reminds me of commercial rifles

I picked this one out of a group of six or seven that came together out of an estate collection, some years ago. I didn't know much about M1903s, but liked this one because it had its original barrel and the bore was really pristine.

1918 rifle that has the "Hatcher" gas-escape hole drilled in the left side of receiver. By extrapolation (s/n 9003xx), this example was likely produced in June of 1918.

Barrel dated 5-18.
Straight bolt handle.
Smooth buttplate.
Serrated trigger.
Stock with grasping grooves and a two reinforcing bolts.
High-hump handguard with sight line clearance cut.
Rear sight without 2850 yard volley notch.

Slight correction: The receiver was serialized in Februaqry 1942; the barrel is original, though. Nice rifle!

Here is mine. Was given to me by a cousin who traded some car parts for it around 1970.

Here is mine a 3.11 remington 03. I bought it all correct except a replacement commercial controls bolt. I had an extra 03A3 blued bolt and put that in it for looks. I am still looking for a genuine original and correct remington 03 bolt. I am proud of it no mater what.
