Hello there John. I don't know anything about the 1911, but this'll be a stab in the dark. I was just checking Poyer's book, and maybe the symbol could be an inspection mark? I'm only basing this on pg #290. figure 6-34, and it's similiarity to the Ithaca inspection marks. Was I close?

I never saw an inspection mark like that or in that position. My guess would be some kind of private property mark. It looks like a very stylized eagle or phoenix.

I am 99% certain that I have seen that mark. If memory serves me, it was on a M-1 Garand. HTH. Sincerely. BruceV.
John, I hope I'm not violating any security but,between the old UDT [Frogmen] and the Navy Seals was a little known and super secret force known as the Penguins. No, that is the mark of the Phoenix Foundation, MacGyver's super secret employers. They were just a bit less heavily armed than the USMC, and the cops all bowed and scraped when they showed up.

John,seriously;I am pretty sure that I have seen that mark(whatever it might be) before only on the RIGHT side of the trigger guard area of the frame.The same spot you get that little triangular stylized stamp on Colt made frames.
My M1911A1's are way in the back of my safe along with my Inglis' or I would dig them out and look.The only one I might USE is right at the front along with 3 loaded mags(hollow points natch)
Since we are here.Any idea as to who might have an extra HS barrel in good shape?A friend is trying to restore what appears to be an early(900K)R-R and the barrel is a pitted Colt.
I trust that this bit of G2 may be of help.

After about serial number 900,000 Ithaca used several different markings on the front left side of the triggerguard. They were different stylized stamps probably applied during the inspection process, and that may be what you are thinking about.
Over the years I have seen a couple of Remington Rands with the same type stamp in the same location, but did not record the serial number range.
Remington Rand production started at 916405, so depending on how early the pistol is, the Colt barrel may be correct. How about two or three more digits?
I think BruceV is correct. You should take this over to the Garand forum as I seem to recall that mark being discussed some time ago. I'll probably get this part wrong but I think it might have been seen on barrels when op rod pulled back where other barrel markings are found.
