I have several carbines I need to remove the Type II/Type III sites and replace them with flip sites. So, those that have used the tool, is this the greatest thing since sliced bread? Easy off / Easy on? Or just put these carbines in a vice and 'gently' bang the old sites off?
You can buy a nice tool for about $100 plus postage that is in my opinion the greatest thing since sliced bread. Putting the receiver in a vice and gently banging off the sight does work most of the time. If you have a really tight one, this method can be more difficult. Using the tool also allows you to move the sight a little bit at a time if you want to adjust windage. With the "bang it" method it is easy for the sight to move too much in one direction or the other and you wind up banging it back and forth for a while before you are happy with the position. Well worth the money in my opinion.
The drifting it in a vice could also wind up showing marks from whatever you used as a tool. The press should not do that. Leaf sites are $100 and up, adj sites $25 and up. Wouldn't want to ruin any of them.
I forgot to mention another nice thing about the rear sight tool, it is portable! If you want to adjust the rough windage on an adjustable rear sight you can shoot a group and then disassemble the carbine and move the sight a little to get the mechanical zero right. Also this is the only way you will set the windage on a flip (leaf) sight. Sure beats taking it to the range, taking it back home, putting it back in the vise and bumping it some more and trying it again.

Sometimes it is better to just be lucky. Pul a flip sight on a carbine last winter. Centered it by eye. Took it to the range with the intention of measuring where it grouped so I could measure and move. Son of a gun: windage was right on.

The one on ebay had to have all the screw holes "chased", as I couldn't get a bolt thru any of the holes, even to assemble the tool. Not that it's a big deal, but for $100. I expected more.
The Fulton Armory one is excellently and accurately done. Heavier duty than the other. No futzing with chasing the threads.
