I am going to join.The old strengh in numbers thing.What a long strange trip its been.I can remember swearing rite before being discharged in73"will not ever join anything again. Or where the color green again"Back in those days you did not tell very many people you were a vet.At least I didnt.

I have never been eligible to join the AL.Used to get yearly mail invites to join but my years of service(Sept56 thru Sept59) falls through the cracks of their eligibility.Quote:

i guess my experience was different, i got out 38 years ago today.few days after we got out, one of the guys i enlisted with decided to check out the local VFW in Elkhart IN, our home town.well we went in for a beer and a fellow sitting at the bar asked if we had been to Vietnam, we answered yes. well he proceded to tell us basicly we where lucky not too have been in a "real war" where planes bombed us. well we finished our beer and left , myself i never looked back. after that never checked into any services orgs.not flaming anyone or any org, but that a-hole just turned me off. I got about the same treatment from the VFW after Viet Nam. Now that I've seen the decision by the head honcho of the VFW to excuse Janet Napoletono's slur on returning vets from the present wars, I feel lucky I didn't join.Quote:

Joined neither one, I was not shot at, so the VFW is out. And I don't drink, so either one would not be in the running. Three yrs Army and retired after 25 in the Air Guard. Closest I came was being in Panama the two weeks before the baloon went up. Hardly worth mentioning.

American Legion - 10 years this July. Joined after I saw the Honor Guard do military rites at a neighbor's funeral. I would like to be involved in that after I retire from my present occupation, if the Lord wills...
I got out 37 years ago. Went to the local VFW post and was also told that Viet Nam wasn't a "war". Haven't had any use for those guys since. I've recently thought about visiting the local AL . . . might still happen.
Member of the Legion since about 1980, member of the VFW since 2001.
Belong to the American legion, VFW,VVA, DAV. I've never attended a meeting of any of these organizations. I joined in order to support financially my fellow vets.

As a Vietnam vet (had it easy, though) I must have been invisible...now I prefer to be that way. If they had made any effort to make guys welcome in that time period they probably would have accomplished something. As far as I'm concerned they blew it.
I'd rather be a member of this forum (and the old one) than to join some organization of good old boys that all went to high school together.
I'm a Vietnam Army vet and don't belong to any of them. My impression is that they are often populated by people who like to hang out in bars, drink and smoke, and dwell on the past. That simply is not who I am. I don't mean to offend members active in their local organizations and I respect and thank those who participate in honor guards. To each his or her own. Carl

I had an experience many otrher Vietnam vets had. When I tried to join the VFW after I returned from Vietnam, I was told "We don't want your kind."
That's an exact quote.
I found the VFW did not want us after viet nam, now they are dying off at a 1000 a day, The vfw may go by the wayside as well.
Odd how things/events are different. I went to Viet Nam exactly 14 days after I turned 18 yrs old. I spent 26 Months there returning exactly 62 days after I turned 20 yrs old.Quote:
