The picture from Italy looks like a British or Canadian sniper with a US Model 1913 Warner & Swasey Musket Sight. And what is it mounted on? It looks a little like an 03A3!
Could be a P14. Looks like it has the spot for a volley sight on the side.
Great pics. The italian sniper makes himself very friendly to countersniping. Nice glossy scope but the huge piece of grass on his cap gives a good camouflage:D

I think you're talking about the Soviet sniper...
But yeah that one blade of grass makes him the master of camouflage.
Even Vasily Zaytsev himself would not have been abled to find him !

Definitely a P14. The Canadians used a few Warner Swazey scopes on Ross Rifles as well. This pic is also posted on a spanish website. Be interesting to know where the reference to Italy comes from. Not that im arguing I d just like to know more as i used the same pic in a post about 2 weeks ago.Quote:

yes thats a common scope that the marines and other parts of the US Army used till Vietnam. The lenght of the scope can come from technical reasons out of the time of production.

At the beginning of WW2 the USMC looked at what was available on the US rifle scope market (not much) and decided the Unertl was the best choice. The reason the order order was cancelled was theat the USMC Commandant had received reports that the "rifle was not effective in combat". Its length, finicky adjustments, delicate construction, lack of moisture resistance, sliding mounts, narrow field of view and low relative brightness made it far from an ideal combat scope especially in the jungles of the South Pacific.
The Unertl did have fairly high magnification at 7.8X which was certainly an advantage over the scopes selected for the M1903A4 and M1 snipers.
The Unertl Company went on to design and manufacture a new 10X scope for the Marines in the 70's for use on the M40 series. This was a compact, heavy duty scope with internal adjustments and rigid mount.

Lyudmila Pavlichenko she was a history student. 309 confirmed kills including 36 German snipers.
She was wounded in 1942, then went on tour as an official hero. Finished college after the War, became a professional historian. Passed away in 1976.

She was a kindergarten teacher in real life. KIA , age 22. She had 4 brothers, one of whom survived the war.
Roza's wearing the Order of Glory - 3rd Class.
