sharing a recent inland buy

Hey all

I wanted to share my most recent acquisition with you all. its an inland 137xxx with 42 barrel, though the outside of the barrel isnt the best condition, and the sling swivel is missing (anyone with one for sale?)
It is all inland parts,

That barrel looks like salt air might have got to it. Wonder if there is any way to save it. Is the pitting as bad as the pics show? Other than that...looks like a great keeper.
11(?) - 42 barrel would be hard to find. Either way very nice early find. Thanks for sharing !!

i dont think the barrel is salveagable, it is pitted into the metal, and not just into the finish. the inside is not as bad, and actually gauges decent, at least below 3.

the barrel looks possibly like dulite where the handguard covered it too

There is a way to reduce the appearance of the pitting without sandblasting. You could put several coats of Brownell's 'Dark Parkerizing' bake-on Gun Kote on it, baking it between coats. It's really too bad about the barrel, but that stock and the other parts would bring big bucks.

Clean it up as best you can and put some rounds down the tube. It's not perfect, but is still a great looking carbine IMO. That's a great stock!

thanks guys, when i was going to buy it and I saw the barrel, my original plan was to part it out, but when i got it in my hands, that feeling changed, and I cant stomach the idea of parting it out now.

i might keep the repair work light, and maybe do a reversible cold blue on the barrel only until i can find a pristine same date 42 barrel in original finish(1 in 1 million chance?)

I am missing 3 swivels, if you find a stash let me know!

That's right, and for all we know that carbine may have been pitted by exposure to sea salts in the PTO. There are any number of circumstances under which this may have happened, one being that the carbine was dropped by a casualty on the beach and picked up later and stored without washing with drinking water. It may have been put in a leather scabbard wet and left for a time. Normally the damaged parts would have been replaced or the carbine parted out, but perhaps it happened near the end of the war and the carbine was 'brought back' and put away.

I have a question about what you want to really do with that carbine - ae you wanting it as a shooter or as a historic piece?

That carbine looks like it has been to war. The pitting and patina is different above the wood than it is in the covered areas. there is no question if the rear sight or barrel band are original. I think it is priceless in its current state. Too bad its so hard to track down where it served. I am of the opinino that you try to "correct' it by replacing the worn battle scarred parts, you are "uncorrecting" it. Installing a different barrel means you remove the REAL original historic barrel.

if you are wanting a shooter, you are probably better off trying to buy another carbine in better shape that to replace half to the parts on that one.

I decided not to actually modify it at all. it is still sitting as is, but a little cleaner. I have not shot it, being so original, i just couldn't do it, and now it is more of a safe queen. I did get a screw and sling loop, and an early khaki sling for it though.

I actually also picked up another early one, 88K, and restored that one, which is the shooter for an early carbine set up.

I agree. But..... If the barrel is changed (and I hope it won't be) the the gun will loose it's "history", or, if you will, it's soul as a collectable. I hope Davfink shot it before doing anything and found that it shot well. The condition is a little rough but it appears to be all original.

Of course I am more of a collector than a shooter, but that is just the way I see it, completely original M1 Carbines are few and far between. Davfink, how did it turn out?

If your farming the parts out, please let me trade or buy your stock set. I have a 5 digit Inland that is correct and in need of the correct stock.
