Unlike some other auction houses, Switzer does not charge a buyer's premium. Having attended a number of these auctions, I can say that plain hunting guns can be bought for very reasonable prices, particularly shotguns not suitable for use with steel shot. Quality pieces do not go begging. Most of the folks are locals, interested in hunting guns. But there are serious buyers who attend for the good stuff. Absentee bids can be left. The door opens an hour before the start of the sale, arrive early, and you will be able to inspect.
that number 4 Mk T sure looks pretty unfortunately I live on the other side of the country then turn north, will probably send them a absentee bid though make you guys work for it a little. I am curious what they have for 455 webley. If anyone sees any old boxes of wrapped cartridges or RCBS dies for the Webley buy them I will pay whatever you paid plus a very generous surcharge, enjoy the auction:sos:

I went to the auction. It was great. I got another Krag and a BSA trainer marked C Broad Arrow plus a British commando stilleto(Sykes/Fairburn).
Can you have a Lee sniper rifle without a (T) on the left side of the reciever? I took a loup and tried to find the (T) on the reciever of the Lee sniper and it was not there. I had a younger fellow (better eyes) search and he failed to see it also. The other marks and numbers seemed OK, IMHO. BTW it went for around $2,200.00. A dealer I know told me the rifle and scope can had "issues".

The rifle was genuine. The mount was also. So was the scope. The scope case was real. Unfortunately, they were not united during WW2. It was a parts set. The price it sold for was reasonable for the parts, which was the basis for the purchase. (I didn't buy it, but I know the purchaser.) Did you notice that when laddie installed the scope, the ring caps were rotated - numbers on the caps were on the right side? The rear ring also covered most of the scope markings.
I was interested in the Krag, as a project, but I guess you wanted it more than I did.
tiriaq,yes, the ring caps were an issue, but my question is about the (T) stamp, or lack there of, on the reciever.
What sort of project for the Krag?

The Krag bore looked good, so it should be an excellent shooter. Krags have a reputation for accuracy. I would have eventually restored the forend, returning the rifle to issue condition. The BSA Martini is interesting, has the C/l\, but no cadet corps marks. These are dandy shooters.
Did you notice that the last sported Ross went to an absentee bidder for $400? I cannot conceive of why someone would have bid that, unless they thought that it was a factory sporter. It did appear to have a sporter bolt in it, though, judging from the pronounced case colours.
That poor little remnant of a Snider cadet carbine went for $200, homemade barrel band and all. Bad enough that the tumbler shank was broken, and hammer was missing, but the attemped repair to the tumbler by welding should have been done with the tumbler out of the lock.

1481 went for 6 and change. The guy that got it told me he was suspicious of it not having a bayo lug. Turns out it was a '43 rebarreld to 7.62 NATO, glass bedded, target rifle. One of the best (and smartest) deals there that I heard of.
Well, Switzer's sent me an email and said I was the winning bidder on item #1387, the 1939 Oberndorf German K98k Mauser, bayonet/scabbard and cleaning kit set ..... :)
I'm going to have start selling things soon, to make room for the new girls.... :lol:

The LB 7.62 went for $675.
So - did you have any detail pics to go on regarding that K98k? I had thought of absentee bidding it, but unless it was a vet bringback, I wouldn't have been interested as I already have all the refurbed K98k's I need.
If you don;t mind my asking - what did you get it for? (which is a different question than your max bid amount - lol!)
Did you check the mount to see if it was not a Canadian made mount???? Canadian mounts (some) had the ring number on the LEFT side and not the right.. Also, the early Mk.1 REL scopes had the name and serial number on the BOTTOM of the scope and you had to remove it from the rifle or turn the rifle on the side and look into the bottom of the scope tube to read the numbers. I have a couple REL scopes with the info on the bottom, in case anyone wants to see a picture of them.
Scope serial and makers marks were on top, partly obscured by the rear ring. Bracket had a B-prefix rifle serial on it. Bracket serial was set in a shallow end milled cut. Ring cap numbers were on right, bracket ring numbers on left. Staking punches did not line up with cap screw slots.
Claven2 - No way of knowing the provenance of the K98k, but if there ever was a vet bring back, this could certainly be it. No rod, but otherwise absolutely correct and untouched. I'll leave it to Badger to discuss price with you. I know that Paul Switzer did send out photos prior to the sale.
The scope tube numbers faced up, but were partially covered by the rear rings, which I presumed was because some one had installed them reversed. I didn't notice the blue or red marks on the scope tube. Frankly, once I saw that there was no T on the reciever, I new I was over my head since the other marks looked real enough. I therefor moved on, to leave it to the experts, of which there were plenty there let me assure you. LOL LOL The stake marks on the parts attatched to the reciever (which you attatch the scope mount to) were centre punched too far from the threads to do their job. IMHO Also these same screw slots were buggerd a bit. this may or may not be inportant, but it was enough ( in my ignorance) to put me off from bidding.

ok, well I found out the K98k price from someone who attended the auction and if it was truely a vet return, it was on the higher side but not an unheard of price. It's about what I'd expect to pay at auction, actually. I'm a bit jealous too - pre-war vet bringbacks in righteous shape are far from common rifles ;) The bright side is knowing the buyer, we'll see nice pics of it!

I just bought the rifle only and also found no T there. Otherwise a very nice rifle. There is some kind of black paint on the receiver, if the T is faint it might be full of paint.Quote:

The prices on these things are going nuts. It cost me essentially what the whole outfit cost at the auction for just the scope, bracket, and can (no 8mk2, the canvas pouch type). I will likely resell the can, but then again, can a packrat part with anything?
I am hoping to take the set out to the range later this afternoon and give her a sighting in. If it works out well, it wil take the load off my LB sniper, which I use for most of the milsurp and long distance matches.
