Inherited a M1 - Curious what I have

my grandfather passed recently and I inherited his M1. I have done some basic research on the weapon but have run into some confusion.

I have identified the following markings:

The Receiver is stamped behind the rear sight with Winchester and 1296550

Left side of rear sight is stamped with what looks like a S

The front part of the receiver is stamped with "US Carbine" "CAL 30 M1"

screw at top of stock just to rear of reciever is stamped with "Rock OLA"

left side of the stock inside where the sling would go - it is stamped with RMC

on the right side of the stock it is stamped with RMC with what looks like a circle and cross cannons underneath.

There a 4 magazines all with different stamps (KSG, UI, BW, and MN)

What does this imply? is it a Winchester? Was it manufactured by Rock OLA or is it a rebuild with mixed parts - Based on some reading so far - Is it safe to assume it is a highwood?

It sounds like it's a rebuild, but you may have some valuable parts. :)

Will you please post some photos of all markings you can see? We'd love to see what you have and help you.

Yes, photos would be great. It could be a WWII era Winchester that had it's stock swapped out along the way with one mfgd. by RMC. Nice unmolested WWII carbines are always nice to see and hear about. However, I have also developed an appreciation for those that show usage and have history. No doubt parts were swapped out during WWII due to breakage, or GI cleaning parties. The stock may have also been changed out in the many years following WWII. Regardless, being owned by your grandfather makes it very special.

you are correct - being owned by my grandfather makes it very special especially since he was part of the D-Day Invasion hitting Ohama Beach in the 1st and 2nd Wave as a signalman on 2 different landing craft.

He is fortunate to have a grandson who will treasure his carbine as a tribute to his service for our country.

Formulaforspeed, your carbine could be original except for the wood. Next you need to learn how to disassemble and ID the internal parts.

It looks like your Grand-Father was like SGT. York, by that I mean, he cut the short leaf of the sight into a V. It's reported SGT York liked the V sight of a 03 over the 1917. All in All, it's a real keeper.

I am going to try to disassemble tomorrow and post pictures of items that have distinquishing marks

Ok I have the carbine stripped down - I was able to take a few pictures. I see "SG" at two different locations, a "L" at another, a "Z" or a "2" at another. in another place there appears to be a "M" or "Sigma"

The only thing I can tell from the pix is that it looks (hard to tell from the angle) to be a low wood stock. What is stamped on the barrel, @ the front end, behind the front sight? Also, is there a stamp on the hammer; can't tell from the pic. Looks like a nice carbine, overall.

i couldnt find any markings on the barrel in the area you described. the hammer looks like a L or 7
