ok so i posted this on cgn. but i found this site while looking for my info about enfields so i figured id post up my baby on here also. i havent fired it yet cause ive heard that you're not suppossed to use commercial ammo because it's to much for the gas chamber or something like that. so maybe someone here can point me in the direction to buy some cheap/good ammo that i can shoot.

Before making a recommendation for ammunition, in what country do you live? If you happen to live here in the U.S., and you qualify (or can qualify) to purchase from the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), they are the best place to buy ammunition that is correct for your M1 Garand rifle. Otherwise, you are probably better off reloading for your rifle. HTH, KarlKW

Check it out, I think that they are expecting a sizeable shipment of M1-appropriate ammunition sometime after the 1st of the year (2010). You are correct in not using commercial .30-06 in your Garand, you should be looking for M2 ball USGI ammo or similar. HTH, KarlKW

Greek made HXP ammo is fantastic for the M1 if you can get your hands on it. accurate, non corrosive and not very dirty.

I've bought a few boxes of ammo from http://www.ammojunction.com and they haven't failed me yet. Resonable prices during these times when it's hard to find ammunition locally and over the internet.

You may NOT want to buy Greek HXP M2 ball, since you live in California. The jacket of HXP ammo has a thin shell of iron/steel that may not be permitted on ranges in your state (that boolit may spark and burn down your entire state!)

My advice....Buy a few boxes of Hornady Match Ammo for your Garand. Others can verify, but I believe American Eagle by Federal is also OK for the gas system as well. It's pricier than HXP M2 ball, but you will pass the "magnet" test at any rifle range you go to......FWIW.

HXP is not against the law in California. I shoot it all the time, all year long. There are some ranges in high fire areas that do not allow it during fire season. There may be some that restrict it all year long. I believe there are ranges in other hot dry states that do the same. Just check with the range master to see what the rules are. A major forest fire was started last year by a person target practicing in the national forest in the Mariposa / Yosemite area. He was fined for being careless, not because the ammo was illegal.

as noted by search online ammo: Ammo-junction is about the highest priced ammo I could find. remember, the hazmat fee on top of the box of ammo, so you are approaching $50.00 in cost for one box of 30-06 ammo

Ammo has to be shipped with an "ORM-D" sticker, but I have never heard of a Haz Mat fee for ammo. Can you clarify that? There is no additional fee for ORM-D. What size box of ammo are you saying would cost $50 to ship? Certainly not a standard size box of 30-06 ammo.

Safe to finish box of 180 gr lead tips?

I lucked up and got a Garand at an estate sale a few months back only because the bidding was low and slow and I figured what the heck make a bid...and I got it. Since then I have been learning about this great piece of history I now own and started shooting commericial rounds before I came upon the wealth of information here that has educated me a little better.

I have now ordered some Federal American Eagle 150 Grain made specifically for the Garand, but my question (finally) is if it's safe/advisable to finish off the box of 180 gr lead tips I bought before becoming more enlightened, or is that a big no-no? :dunno:

hey guys im revivin this thread because i have a question .

ok so i took a look at everything on my m1 today and im trying to see if it would be considered proper and what the value would be "if" i was ever to sell it. my receiver is in the 2.8 mil area,which puts it at 1944. but the barrel is marked s-a-3-42.
i looked everything up on this website Springfield Armory WWII Production if there is another site with all the info i can be directed to i would appreciate it.

ok here is all the proper parts for the serial number and year:

op rod catch, follower assembly, sights, lower band, trigger housing, trigger, and bullet guide.

the parts that are from the previous serial number blocks are:

safety: c46015-6sa. the proper part should be SA-11

follower arm: has single bevel. the proper part should be no bevel

Hammer: c46008-3sa. the proper part shoul be c46008-5sa

the follower rod belongs to the next range of numbers as it has the long fork. the proper part should be short fork.

the bolt is an afterwar production. marked 6528287-sa a-10

the op rod is marked d35382-8 sa curved. the proper part should be d35382-9 sa curved

For serious shooting...local competition matches, etc. - I recommend the following: Federal American Eagle #AE3006M1. It's made to shoot in the M1 Garand.

If you're patient and shop around - you should be able to pick some up for under $20.00 a box...which isn't a bad price as ammo prices go today.
