Hi everyone,
Im new to this site and found it will doing some research on Lee Enfields and has been a great help. Im looking at buying a 1942 No4 mk1 for 300....
Is there anything I should look out for or be leery of?

Yep, you did post in the right place. I am also a newbie, but I have learned a ridiculous amount in a short time through this forum - these guys know their stuff. Do you have pictures of the rifle that you can post on here? What is the condition of the metalwork, woodwork, bore, etc? Has it been sporterized/cut down? Is there a screw through the forestock? What marks are there, such as factory, inspection and importation marks? Does the rifle have a slot cut in the bolt slider on the receiver for removing the bolt, of is there a separate bolt release catch behind the charger bridge? These are just some of the questions that I ask when I am interested in a Lee Enfield, because often the person selling the rifle has no idea. Are you buying it from an online auction or a gun shop? The list goes on....
Ya thanks, Unfortunately this person doesnt' have a good knowledge of it.
I do know it is not sporterized (otherwise i wouldnt consider it at all for 300)
The rest of your probably important questions... I dont have a clue. I'm going to take a look at it this weekend and try to evaluate it with the basic knowledge i have now.
for a 1942 No4 mk1 what are the possible manufaturers... or is it all of them.

Be careful - once you have a Lee Enfield, you'll want another, and another, and another...it is called enfielditis, it is catching, and there is no cure.
I am only a total beginner, but I have 2 already, and I have been lucky to get both of them in very good condition for less than $260 each (not including safety checks, shipping and handling), and they are both good shooters. I caught myself heading off to a local gunshop yesterday to look for Lee Enfields, then remembered that I am broke, and I should be selling one of mine to pay for christmas lol.
And you will start using strange words like "nats nacker" :D:D:D

Apparently the bolt and reciever numbers match. It is Ishapore made as well. I dont have pictures yet.... sorry for the lack of info. im thinking $ 300 is a little high

Bunner, Bolt, Body, and Mag. have the Ser. stamped for checking. Other parts will be maker marked. Post pics if you can get them and these good folks will help you out in no time.
Ditto really if get the onfo we will tell Who made it, when, where and colour knickers they had on at the time (if it was a monday, by friday sometimes they had to go without due to rationing)
Matching numbers is always a good thing. Ishapore didn't make any No.4 rifles but they rebuilt quite a few. $300 does sound a little high.Quote:

Nice Indian rebuild, complete w/ fore end repair. It appears the nosecap was numbered to the rifle during rebuild, but that's normal. I like the sculpted old style, just looks nicer than the Indian straight legged foresight protecting ears. Now, check, clean, and off to the range w/it!
Any markings left on the butt socket under the bolt handle? Usually aren't any, but sometimes there are.
nope nothing. i opened it up and its covered in brown "paint" I'm sure its that preservative stuff or cosmoline
there is another symbol on the other side of the stock which is a s↑a.
Can any one tell me what some of the other symbols mean? or point me to a site where i can look them up... my searches have been unsuccessful.

if you notice to the left of the serial number there is a symbol. I found a site that says it is an "unsafe barrel, usually drill purpose for cadets" is that correct?

heh... no its a crap picture or maybe its not the same? its on the bolt arm left of the serial number.
Sorry, this monitor stinks. Its all blackish so I can't make out details. (Friday through Monady are pic looking time .) However, make sure the marks aren't crossed pennants (flags) which are normal, or some version of a crown w/numbers and letters underneath (also normal).
thats what they look like actually. crossed pennants... what is that symbol for?
Bunner, Crossed pennants are often proof marks.

I actually discoved a "&" on the oppsite side of the bolt arm... is this also proof?
