I was wondering what No.4 Mk.IIs that were still in the mummy wrap are going for these days. A local gun shop wanted $1000 for 1 (a little bit too steep in my humble opinion), and I saw 2 for sale at a local gun show for $850 each. Any opinions on what a reasonable price would be for 1 at the moment? Admittedly these are becoming more rare, so I might be looking for an investment to support my enfielditis.

UK price is retail £595 (Bob Burbridge has them for sale) They will need reproofing here in uk thou so you wont get them like that all wraped up unless you are a RFD (i think)
They use to go for $600 (Cdn) here when they were originally imported and until the vendor ran out a few years ago, now I've seen them advertised for $800 to $1,000, but I don't know if they actually sold or not.

Quite a variation in price. I had looked on gunbroker, and the prices are all over the place!
They're only worthwhile if you already have an unwrapped one. I had a wrapped '03a3 for several years that I finally traded off for less than I paid for it, just 'cause it was useless.
As mentioned above, wrapped rifles are usually safe queens. That being said, for collectors that have unwrapped rifles that they shoot, they are a novelty item that is a must to round out a collection.
Badger, when they first came into Canada, they could be had for $150 and new in grease 1950 No4 MkI* Long Branch rifles could be purchased right beside them for $90. I remember the first day I walked into Del Selin's Gun Shop in Vernon, BC and saw several of them on the rack. I was shocked that anyone would pay $90, let alone $150 for a Lee Enfield. I bought one of each, on impusle and thought,"a fool and his money are soon parted". If I had been more astute and a little more well heeled, I would have bought everything he had at a discount and squirreled them away. That was over 20 years ago. Oh well.
I have one of Bob burbridge's imports a 12/54 PF 332*** No4 Mk2 (F) I had looked all over or a mint condition rife from that year and found lots of dross priced between £300 and £500 sterling. Even those reportedly parade ground only never fired (lol) from dealers in the UK were rubbish. So I very happily paid a little over the odds for a genuine perfect condition example. And I am going to shoot it because that's what it was made for, that is if I ever get to find a range in the north west of the UK that ain't almost closed down due to the inept government funding of the TA.
So if you can find one buy it cos there isn't an inexhaustible supply.

Ok, this may be a silly question, but would the bayonet have been inside the wrapping too, or would this have been a separate item?
Mine was in a separate wrapper and the scabbard was also in it's own wrapper.
hello ,this is the first time i use this forum,but when i saw that you were talking about mk 2,s,i had to share with you my latest find,i collect lee-enfield,s and i am crazy about them,so last week i received a call from an antique dealer that i know,he asked me if i was interested in some old rifles, he tought that they were 303s,so i drove as fast as i could to his place,that`s were i saw two half open mummy wraps containing two brand new 1955 faz with consecutive serial numbers,i tought that it was i chance of a lifetime and since the price was ok for me,i took them and ran,sure i had to explain to my wife why these two rifles where different than the other 13 other`s i have,but that was easy,she understood.
How much did they cost you, if you don't mind me asking?
The rifle a wrapped Faz, the Bayo, and Scab were a gift for my father inlaw.

Now, if only I had that kind of luck lol. Someone is selling a No.4 Mk.II 2 1/2 hours drive from me, but they just took it out of the wrap, shot 50 rounds through it, and now wants $650. Errr...I think he's being optimistic lol.

I've seen these rifles go for various prices. Wrapped ones from $500.00 to $1000.00+ !! I have seen unwrapped but unissued ones go as high as $750.00.
I traded a unwrapped, unissued one for a wrapped one as I am a collector, not a shooter who has a collection of rifles. From some of the previous posts, a few people seem to be confused as to the difference. I do in fact shoot many of my rifles, I just don't feel the need to shoot ALL of them.
JBS... I'm happy to hear you sorted out that index issue. I remember being one of the first to caution this procedure... as your now obvious skills hadn't shone through yet ;)
I purchased this one in July and will be the first to admit that I paid more for it than I wanted to. I did not pay the asking price nor the shipping cost, so I have convinced myself that I got a deal :madsmile:
In 6 months to a year you'll think of it as a bargain, the way prices are going lol
Wonder if bob has any more in stock. I think a phone call will be in order on monday morning. At the way things are going price wise this will be the only way I will be able to afford another mint lee.

last time i spoke to Bob he had 1 (one) £595 was the asking price. That was last month He gets them from USA as thats where they all seem to have ended up. British gov. never sells onto UK market as I understand it, and these days surplus is sent to arm the Afgan police force (or the like) or tipped into the sea ( my friend was doing this very recently for the army slinging dismantled arms into the sea of the side of a boat ) Nothing much is any good anymore to civvy shooters ! !
AAArrrggghhhh - stop throwing them into the sea!!! Or at least tell me where this is being done and I will learn how to scuba dive. either that or join the Afghan police (no thanks).
Lots ended up in the US? Not from where I am standing lol. I will have to dig deeper into this.
To clear what i said the stuff going into the sea were SLR's and the like from when the British army changed to SA80's NOT Enfields (This was in the Falklands) So you can breath again !! I double cheaked the story today and it was about 15 years ago !
I have been told its not gov. policy to sell British arms in the UK, hence why lots of Lee's are everywhere else but here!! There is an Italian web site with lots of Lee's on it, its where Henry Krank get them from, they may have new Lee's, try them.

The Italian Lee's are beat up No4 mk 1 or Mk 1* none matching numbers and bashed to bits very dark in colour and tacky feeling perhaps too much oil ???and as for price they vary from £325 upwards.
Pay the extra and get a good one. You get what you pay for.

They are the new ones, They have quite a number in stock.
It looks very like they were parade ground guns and bashed around with no thaught for the condition of the rifle. As all the bolts are different to the rest of the rifle I would suspect that they have been mixed up from rifle to rifle to get the head spaceing correct instead of trying to keep it all correct and replace just the head. The question is if they were un fired why would the bolts be so miss matched did the italian's remove the bolts from every rifle when putting them to bed after a hard days square bashing and dump them in a big box?.
I know that when one of our Enfelds returns home from our earstwhile posession in the Americas it has to be re-profed did these returning Italian rifles have to go through the same procedure ??? or perhaps as Italy is in the EU are they exempt ??
The rifles that I had a look at were all No4 Mk1 actions with the slot removal for the bolt and retaining the mag cut off lump on the front right hand side of the receiver.

Looking at the company website, it appears that when the rifles were put into storage in Italy the bolts were removed and placed in separate boxes, hence the complete pig's ear of a situation regarding mismatched bolts - sheesh
FWIW: I bought a "mummy" rifle for 175$ when they first came here to the States. That was early 90's?? Not too long ago I paid 500$ for one out of the wrap. I just got a really nice 9/52 PF 251xxx for 300$ with almost 200rds Greek 303.
I was buying them 20 at a time back then. Both of my personal wrapped ones went back to England this year and were sold by "guess who?". I still have one unwrapped one that I shoot.

I've lost count without getting out my record book as to how many were exported back via BDL. Most were purchased elsewhere. Almost all were surplused here in the early 1990's straight from Donnington via Century Arms in Vermont, (now Miami, FL). My two personal rifles were A3841 and A5820. Both new in the wrap. And now you know why my neck was broken from all the packing and shipping! Enjoy those rifles! It actually does my heart good to put fine British rifles back on the ranges of England not to mention many fine Canadian rifles back on the ranges of Canada. You guys have been my best customers since the US$ has been destroyed by the current government here. Your business is appreciated more than you know.
I should correct that the US$ has been destroyed by the last two governments here. I can't just blame the current one. I sure wish I could run my business that way but it doesn't work in the real world!

Well Brian one of the returned rifles will be getting its first outing on a cold and frosty MOD Altcar range tomorrow morning. It is getting fed with new hand load 303 ( no old crap going down this pipe).
We are on one of the shorter ranges (200yds ) so it should be interesting to see how it groups. Thanks again for rescueing these fine rifles from bubba.

I have a certain LOVE for Nevada even though I'm not much for the desert environment. It's a long story. I come out and work for/buy from SAR/LMO from time to time. I'll be there for Shot too next month. Not working but just cruising the show and touching base with others in the trade.
I doubt many of the new Mk.2's would be bubba'd considering their current values but one never knows. I hope you guys enjoy them to the fullest.

I have two Lee Enfiled's but the one I want to tell you about was wrapped like the one that started this thread.
I got out of the Navy in 1989 and found myself in Traders Gun Shop in San Leandro California looking at a rifle that I knew was British and was a Lee Enfield.
Having been born in England I have a natural pull to British history and Allied WWII bolt action rifles in general.
I bought my mummified 1954 No. 4 for $89.00, tax included!
It took me two weeks to get all the cosmoline off but once I did here is what I found!

I just picked up this Irish Contract rifle last week. Yes, it is an Irish contract serial number. $605 shipped with bayo. Got it off a classifieds gun board at 2am, and only 1 hour after he posted it.

The rifle was not in wrapper, but it was still unfired and caked in cosmo. I found hand sanitizer to melt the cosmo off in quick order and then hit the stock with denatured alcohol and rubbed in Tung oil. (I know BLO is customary, but I like 100% Tung).
It ain't unfired no more, however! My first handloads were sent down range just this past Friday.

The case shoulders stretched out like any enfield, but the case heads showed only .002" swell. I'm reaching the recommended velocities with no high pressure signs.
Oh, and speaking of accuracy tests...I figured I would prepare and got some front sight blades off ebay. I think I got the screw because 3 of the 5 appear way too tall for the standard heights I've read.Quote:
