Some pics of the CMP Inland racker

I apologize for the pictures. It is dark, dreary, and snowing outside, so I had to rely on flash and overhead lighting. I'll get better sunny day pics outside, if that ever happens here again! The lighting is so poor, I had to tweek the photos to get them more natural. The process is further hampered by "Frontier mis-Communications" and what they have for a pitiful excuse of what they call DSL in my rural area.

The metal is great and just needed some Balistol to clean it. Wiped it down with Break Free. The stock I cleaned just rubbing it with BLO/mineral spirits. but it was pretty clean and dry, so I soaked it with two coats of BLO, which it sucked up. I forgot to gwt a pic of the muzzel with an M2 ball in it. I will post that later.

AH, give mw a bright, sun-shiny day to take some decent photos. I can honestly say that it looks better in real than it does in pics.

With great metal and less than 1.5 ME, I am sure it is the wood with its carvings (not shown) and its "de-greaser spa finish" was what made it a racker. I figure when the whether gets warm, I will give the stock some more coats of BLO and a little 0000 steel wool. Until then, it will probably be wearing a minty SA pot belly with a new Saginaw butt plate.

It is definitely a mixmaster::lol:

"Rock-o" Type I firing pin, "W" extractor, "IO" flat type II bolt with type I ejector, "SG" trigger housing, "H" in a shield Winchester type II rear sight, Inland "PI" Type III slide, Postwar replacement Type III band "AMCO" or something like that, post war flip safety, unmarked (except for M) type III magazine catch, "LQ" trigger, "S" hammer, "GB" (?) Type II sear, "W" Winchester type II recoil lug. I am sure there is more, but I think it qualifies for one of Brasidas' "Mutts!"

It is the sum of its parts, however. Great finish, looks like new springs, GREAT trigger pull, and looks like the rear sight is actually staked fairly centered on the bridge, so maybe it is one that won't have to have the rear sight staked left to hit on at 100 yards. I can't wait to shoot it.

Looks really nice, Bernie. Do you happen to happen to have any pics of the stock before you applied the BLO? I'd really like to see a before and after.

I'm restoring a type V stock that is really dry and haven't decided weather to stain it before the BLO or use Gunny's wax.

Also, please give us a range report after you shoot it!

Brasidas, no close ups, just this pic I took in the box. Doesn't really show how dry and porous it was. I think two more coats over time and some 0000 will help more.

Here is the M2 ball snug in the bore. Measured a tad under .180 inch from bore to case of bullet. Should be less than 1.5, I am guessing. According to CMP tech page, probably close to 70-75% bore life left.

Try buffing the stock with a felt pad until the wood is warm to the touch between adding coats of your BLO mixture.

Rangemaster, skip the oooo steel wool. You'll have a hard time getting the steel fibers out of the wood, and you can't help but get them in. Like Painter said use a good felt type pad. I warm up my BLO in the can with a torch and use a small hobby paint brush to apply the BLO. Let it soak then rub it in and wipe it down. Don't forget to do the inside also.....Frank

Thanks guys, I will try that way. I used a mix up 1/3 mineral spirits and 2/3 BLO to saturate it using a 3/4" brush with the grain, let it set about an hour, then wiped it down to see if any grunge was left. I then gave it a second coat of BLO (can warmed in boiling water), let it soak in , and wiped down the dripping excess. As you can see, it has thoroughly soaked that in. It was REALLY dry.

I'll do some more like you suggest. Do I use the felt pad to buff it when it is still wet, before or after it is semi dry? Thanks.

Rangemaster, I let it soak about an hour, I rub it in with my hands, wear those disposable gloves. Then I like the final wipe down before it is semi-dry, only because I think it is less work, but it may take more coats. I have a Korean stock that didn't show the cc untill coat #four, and then it has to be in just the right light. It's looking good now. Everybody does it a little differant depending on how you're set up, or how many you are doing at the same time. HTH.....Frank

Could you tell me where you found these accessories?

While I tend to wheel and deal and trade weapons quite a bit, the accessories I keep and have had for a long time.

The Type I pouch on the stock I bought at a gunshow probably 25 years ago, but can be had on EBAY either real or replica. The original M4 Bayonet with the original M8 short fob sheath I also picked up about 10-12 years ago at a gunshow. The 30 round GI mags, I have had for at least 20+ years, (all GI "SEY," "AI," "J", or European "AYP" military). The pistol belt I have also had as long as I can remember.

The 30 round pouches I recently bought on EBAY (about a year ago). Originals run $30-40, while repos are about $20.
