Check the pawn shops, ya never know!

So after shopping with the wife one day, this was about six years ago, I asked her to pull into the pawn shop, just so I could "check" real quick. :)

At the time, I didn't know much about carbines (still don't), but I knew a little, and I loved them. Always be my favorite. :thup:

Well I spotted one on the rack, and the first thing I noticed was the lack of bayonet lug. "Sir, may I see that carbine?"

Upon closer inspection, I noticed the flip sight and highwood stock. I checked the serial number- 6 digit! At the time I had never seen a carbine so nice, just some "shooters" at the gun show.

Then the cell phong rings, I had been cradling this thing for ten minutes!

I told the guy thanks and left with my wife. I didn't even ask a price, there was no tag, and I knew she'd say "Do you really need another gun?" And I only had a few at the time!

I was in la la land the whole ride home. So early the next day I said, "Honey, I have to go to town, do you need anything?"

I sweated bullets the whole ride there. Opened the door, WHOOO! Still there! "Sir, can I see that carbine again?" It had a tag on it now, $450. Not one to bargain, I said, "Sir is this the best you can do?"

He said "Hmmm, how about $420?" SOLD!

This is one that I will never let go. I added the sling swivel (repro) and original sling.

I was hoping some of you experts could give me a rundown of my parts and tell me the month and year of manufacture and what is "correct".

Holy Cow! That's one of the nicest Early Inlands I have seen. I suspect it has been put in that configuration as opposed to being 'as-manufactured', but it's still beautiful. Agree with jimb on value.

All I ever come across in pawn shops is Universals, Plainfields, and Blue Skies that would swallow the case neck of an M2 ball! I did find a great 1873 Colt "Frontier Six Shooter" 44WCF, 1880s vintage one time. It was a steal at $750, but I had three kids in college on Deputy pay, so it might as well been a Million!

Seeing 6 digit receivers sell with big crater sized stake/punch marks for nearly $400.
I'd agree with a value of $1200+.
If it's a put together......It's one of the best I've seen.
Would love to see pics of the internals and feedramp.

Nice looking Inland.

By any chance does it have a detachable tuve for the recoil spring (spring tube)?

Also, just 49 carbines later, a group of Inland carbines were lined out and transferred to Rock-Ola.

Wish the pawn shops around here had carbines.

I needs to go a-pawn shoppin' again. Last time, I found a nice Enfield Jungle Carbine for $150. I believe the best hunting is at pawn shops in areas that the economy has hit hard.

Great find. I have a customer that is the kind of guy that could fall head first in a cesspool and come up with a new Rolex. He once found a NIB Win Safari 458 for 300 bucks in one of the pawn shops he checks every Saturday. He is the local king of pawn shop deals. I have to stay away from pawn shops.:madsmile:

In the Saint louis area (at least on the Illinois side) pawnshops charge stupid high prices. With WASRs down to $379 wholesale, a local shop had one for about $800 a couple weeks ago! He was telling me how hard they are to find, yata yata yata! Beat up Marlin 30-30 $550+. I think this guy smokes crack (literally).

I have a friend that runs a pawn shop. I go and see something I want, it is usually about 1/2 of the tag price to me. He still makes money, so you can see the markup with a pawn shop. They have lots of wiggle room, you just have to get them to do it.

Get to know 'em and just buy stuff for a while. It'll do wonders if you're a decent sort. If you're a numbskull, or abrasive, don't expect many good deals...

That is a nice one. My Inland story is when I bought one for $75 from my Navy CO, who had been given it by a Nat Chinese general on Taiwan after shooting a feral hog that was about to gore him (the general). This was in 1975 (that I bought it, not that the hog attacked) and this as-issued M1 with push button safety and Type I barrel band and original stock has been in my safe since.

There are probably a lot of nice carbines left in Taiwan, I'm guessing. Unless the hogs got to chew on them.
