I'm looking at a German military training rifle that looks very similar to a German K98 rifle. It is marked "5.4MM".
Is this the European nomenclature for .22lr and/or can I shoot current .22 lr cartridges in it?
Thanks

Hi Steve,
they had different calibers the older Wehrsportgewehr is chambered in 4mm M20 and since they have the D.S.M. 34 ( Deutsches Sport Modell 34) it is chambered in .22LfB ( .22 Lang für Büchsen ) wich is the same like .22LR. Is it a "Gustloff Werke" rifle ? They are good rifles. The bore diameter is normaly 5.34mm up to 5.4mm but it is also possible that it is a bit smaller.
Regards
Gunner
My Gustloff K.K.W. is marked " kal .22 lang fur Buchsen" on the left side of the barrel and "5.4" on the right, with the proofs. The ammo is marked "Zielmunition Kal 5.6 / lang fur Buchsen". It is all .22 LR. The rifle is also "SA der NSDAP" marked on the stock.
Hi Tom in NJ,
thanks for the pics. That is what i meant. They are nice rifles Is yours also as good as ours at 100yards ( 2.5" with ten rounds )?
Regards
Gunner
Here is a pic:

Still waiting for more info from the seller, but what I have been told is that it has a 2.5.5" barrel, has "42" stamped on the receiver and is 5.4mm. Supposed to be a .
Hi Steve,
nice looking rifle. They had 7 makers:
BSW, Anschütz, Gustav Genschow &Co, Mauser / Oberndorf, Walther, Haenel and the Gustloff Werke.
Tell us how it shoots. Sometimes it brings funny reactions if you see some guys waiting for the big bang of an 8x57mm and they hear the small noise of the .22LR!
Have fun

Hi Gunner!
If I get it, I'll post better pics and a range report.
How is everything with you?
I just scored two Finnish M1891 Mosin Nagants. One look pretty pristine, with a Finnish stock, the other not quite as nice with it's original Russian stock. Both are supposed to have excellent bores.
Are Finnish and Russian Mosin Nagants common in Germany?
Steve
Hi Steve,
Nice to hear from you! Here is everything OK! Yes the Nagants are common over here. But the Finnish Nagants are rare and they have the call to be better than the Russians. Two guys at our gun club shoot this ones one the 1891/30 and the other one has an original 1891/30 sniper and both rifles are good shooters. Congrats you have a nice collection! Hope your all right too!
Best Regards
Gunner
Calfed's rifle looks most like a kkw (kleinkaliber wehrsportgewehr). However, the picture doesn't disclose enough detail to tell the whole story. The kkw did not have the stock bolt that the pictured rifle has. BTW, Tom in NJ's GW-KKW is very early and shows the crown-B and -U proof marks that were retired in 1940. Below one of each of the four kkw's (BSW, Mauser, Walther & Gustloff).

So is the consensus that a 5.4 mm is likely to accept some .22 rimfire?
Hi Steve,
Yes, there is normaly no problem with it. They are made for it.

Gunner
Thanks, gunner.
I'll go ahead and bid on it.
As Gunner said, 5.4mm is .22 caliber. Some of mine are marked both .22 lfb and 5.4mm. The rifle you are bidding on, if it is a kkw will also have .22 Lang fur buchsen (sorry no umlaut) on the left side of the barrel. It is also possible that the rifle is chambered for something other than .22 long rifle (short, long, etc.).
The nominal caliber is 5.6mm, or .22. The bore measured 5.4mm, as indicated by the barrel markings. Lead .22 cal bullets seem to be identified as '5.6' and jacketed ones as '5.56'. The rifles are chambered for the .22 Long Rifle cartridge, if they say "Kal .22 lang fur Buchen" on the barrel.
Yes Tom that is correct. Have an look at the markings and if you`re not sure it is always good to measure the bore diameter. The lead bullets are normaly the better ones in this rifles.

Gunner
The rifle went for far more than I cared to pay for it.
Back to the hunt;)
I've got one that is only marked 5.4mm that I shoot .22lr through. Doesn't seem to be a problem.
I bought a GECO at a garage sale the other day...perfect, 1" at 50 yards with cheap 22lr. I need a cleaning rod or at least the rod diameter and thread size so I can have my gunsmith make a replacement. Looks just like the pics from Wiacaceti. Oh, it even had the original sling...........
Hello all!
I am brand new here, and I am more of an old car guy and not really much of a shooter, although when I went through a one year officer training program in the Norwegian army in 1958-59, I got to fire quite a few different weapons ranging in caliber from .22 to 155 mm and a lot in between.
I found this forum when searching for information on the 5,4 mm rimfire.
Gunner mentioned several manufacturers of these rifles, but did not mention mine. Mine is also marked "Deutches Sportmodell" on the right side. On the left side it gives the manufacturer as "Waffenfab. Aug. Menz Suhl".
I have previously done a search on this manufacturer, but it only came up with small caliber hand gun information, and not much of that either.
I have had this rifle for a long time, and my question was the same as other people had; can I safely fire .22LR ammo with this?
Seems like the consensus is "YES"!
Any comments welcome.
Thanks,
Roar
Swapped on a whim for a Gustloff-Werke KKW .22 today which has had it's bayonet lug removed. Would it be feasible to use a K98k's front end as a replacement without a whole lot of drama? The handguard is gone as well, but that appears to be a "no drama" replacement.
Nose piece DOES interchange with a K98K! Just needs a little file work on the left cross pin hole. The old one has had both sides tweaked a bit, so that nosecap might be an abused replacement. Whilst the "original" was safely stored elsewhere and is now lost forever!
Might start a photo thread if there's any interest in odd details. It's not the best example on the planet, but....
What price range do these rifles go for, only ask I seen one here in the UK and is around £800
Thanks Patrick, maybe a little business opportunity, I,m a licensed dealer so no probs there.
