Large "J" In Slingwell...is this Right

Guys the latest addition to my ever growing collection is a 1.2 million Winchester...overall a nice looking carbine with mostly W parts....the only thing that is concerning me is the stock.It is a low wood stock ,oval cut,long channel stock with feint remains of "P" proof...no cartouche visible or armory rebuild stamps and the only maker ? type mark i can find is a largish "J" in the sling well.......:banghead:

My question is ..is is this a genuine stock or a post war copy or foreign copy ?

Have you guys ever come across one like this before ?....:help:

That should be a wartime replacement stock. :thup:
You say it is the 4.15" barrel channel, does it have the M2 cut?
If it does and is not the type 5 potbelly,I call it a type 4.Some call it a type 3 recut, but to my understanding a type 3 has the 3.15" barrel channel. I hope this helps. GK :beerchug:

J marked stocks I'm guessing are late WWII replacement TYPE III stocks.
They look just like a regular TYPE III from the outside.
They have a 3-1/4 Barrel Channel.
They can be found without the M2 cut out.
3 holes under the butt plate.
BUT................. Look closely and you'll see it has the extra support cut under the recoil plate seat. This feature seen on later TYPE IV AND TYPE V stocks.

I just re-read your post. I see you say you have a long channel.
Maybe J Jewell Bros made both long and short channel replacement stocks.

Hey Charlie and GK....Charlie you got it nailed this "J" marked stock is exactly like yours pictured with the extra cut under the recoil plate...channel is a shade under 3 1/4 " sorry my mistake guys between "long" and "short" .....and is non "pot bellied"..yes it has an M2 "cut" but this doesnt look factory done...it looks too rough....i will remove buttplate to check for holes.

What recoil plate should this have as the one that is fitted has "gaps" between ....its not a "snug" fit like on some of my other carbines....

All of the recoil plates are made the same. You will have the gap no matter which one you choose. The Jewell Bros. stocks were made that way. They were manufactured in 44 and 45 as far as I can tell. Look closely in the sling bevel and on the right side. These stocks usually had a very small crossed cannon cartouche, but it could be in either location.

Thankyou guys...Jimb...where would the ord stamp be on the stock.

The J is still quite pronounced and the stock is in quite good non "bashed" condition..so any marks will be visible.

Were these stocks alloted to any maker or were they just supplied for armory rebuilds ?

They were made for general replacement stocks.
Could have been supplied to any depot to repair damaged stocks.
Not sure about the Crossed Cannons stamp.
I have 5 or 6 of these mostly busted up. I use them for 'Patch' wood.

I don't have any information on when they won their Goverment contract to build replacement stocks.

Seeing the mid to late war features on them I would guess they were contracted to build replacement stocks at this time.
How many? Don't know.

But I've never seen a J marked Potbelly stock.

Remember they were never built for a particular carbine maker. Made just for replacement of damaged stocks. Very likely after many of the main stock makers contracts had ended.

Bill thats superb info....so it is "possible" not having any armory rebuild marks that this early Winchester and this Jewell Bros Stock "could" be a match after the original high wood ?...for a 1.2 million Winchester was replaced by this "J" stock late in the war ?

Yes. And the CC mark on the right side was usually about 1 1/2 -2 inches ahead of the oiler slot.
