1911 replica recommendation

I have previously posted a topic in which I had expessed the desire to purchase a Govt. issue 1911 .45 . Upon doing some research I have come to the conclusion that for my purposes , an original Colt 1911 was way out of my price range for use as a "shooter". This then begs the question : What recommendations would be made for purchasing a replica 1911 which would look and be as functionally correct as possible to an original ? I have just returned from a local gun shop that recommended to me a Para-Ordinance 1911 replica . Any thoughts ? ;I highly value the opinions expressed by my fellow Milsurp enthusiasts on these forums.

They're great but I think the Springfield is closest mechanically. The Auto Ord has the series 70 or 80 safety and firing pin blocks the original doesn't. Also stripping isn't the same because of those small parts.

I think the Rock Island is the best for the money. The are very affordale tight accurate guns. I have many Colts and two Rock Islands. The Colt never leave the safe. I will also add that SARCO has the best prices that I have seen on them.

I assume that you mean a 1911a1. You require one that looks like the original and that limits the field quite a bit. Most of the newer 1911 clones have the ejection port lowered quite a bit and that is a dead giveaway. I bought the Springfield Armory 1911a1 for my self and was looking for the same specs you quote. I have replaced the trigger (folded sheet metal type), hammer (checkered wide), safety and slide release (checkered type also) and installed a mainspring housing with the lanyard loop to complete the look. Yep, they are all different from the late 1911s. One last item, replaced the grips also.

ParaOrdinance GI Expert MSRP $600. I got mine for $500 but i had the rear sight replaced with an adjustable.
Taurus PT 1911. This one has a full length guide rod but is well made and accurate. Average price $600 and it has a lot of the same features of a custom gun.

What do you guys think of the auto-ordnance? I was thinking about getting one in the near future.

I have the Auto Ord and it's rock solid and failure free. It's standard without fancies and add on's. I'm using lead bullets but at the end of a session I finish with ball to remind myself of the recoil. No rattles or problems. BUT, it has the series 70 or 80 safety in the firing pin block so it doesn't strip like the Springfield. They both LOOK G.I.

I vote RIA. Mine is an awesome shooter, and all I had to add were GI grips and an arched MSH with lanyard. I paid $400 out the door. See my pic in the below thread. Off hand at 10 yards I kept 9 rounds in about 2 inches. And that is after not qualifying (or shooting more than a few rounds through) a 1911 in 12 years.

Go ahead and laugh, guys and gals, but I've used my Norinco 1911A1 for more than 20 years without one problem. I carry it every day during rattlesnake season and it has accounted for more snakes than I can count. It is always fun to shoot it alongside my friends with their Kimbers, Colts and Springfield .45's, knocking down the metal targets just like they do. With the exception of white dots on the sights, it is G.I. all the way. The price was right too.

Have you looked at the Colt reproductions? There's a 1911 and a 1911A1, they seem a little tough to find but can be found.

No one has mentioned a Sistema Colt. As I recall some were produced by Colt for Argentina and some produced by Argentina after purchasing the Colt machinery and being trained by Colt. These were produced as I recall around late 30's. Wouldn't one of these be the closest thing there is to a 1911 or 1911A1 at a fraction of the cost and serve well as a "shooter" which is what Toad says he is looking for.

M1927s "Sistema" Colts aren't cheap around these parts any more. Nice original condition examples cost as much as anything else in the class. Beaters, well, are just that.

I got this Colt John Browning commemorative for a little over $600 since it didn't have the wood display case; it's my "1911" shooter.

Depending on how close or accurate it must be like a Colt, but Remington has a brand new 1911 R1 out and it is neat. It has the lowered ejection port and a few other minor updates but it is well finished, well made and I love mine. It shoots like a Colt 45 but I think better with all the improvements. It sells for about 625. You might give it a look/see before you buy

Recently picked up an Armscor 1911 full size chambered in .45 ACP. Importer is Legacy Sports. Pistol known as Citadel . Absolutely gorgeous firearm. U.S. military clone, manufactured on Colt tooling. No disappointments. Cost through gunshop was $600.00 which includes Cal. sales tax, and $25.00 for FFL. Double diamond grips, 2 mags, etc. Exact same price as 1911 Rock Island Armory. Did I mention N.I.B. Wanted a Wilson Combat, but 3 grand touched the wife off.!!!. I'm pleased with no regrets. Still got $$$ for ammo,LOL. Sherman out.

It's the exact same price likely because it's made by Armscor, likely in the same plant. The only difference is the roll mark name on the slide. Metro Arms made the Firestorm marketed by Bersa in the same manner, and prices were the same or nearly the same. They have since discontinued the Firestorm model.

If you are loking for a 1911 how about the Colt Reproducton? I have seen some fine recommendations for it. I have not fired mine but the apearance is excellant.

I am looking at the Remington 1911 R1 & the Kahr Auto Ordnance 1911A1. Both US made.

Going to look at a Springfield Mil Spec tomorrow. Can't beat the warranty.
