Questions about Remington 1903

I have found a remington 1903 I am considering buying. But it has a different stock than the ones I am seeing around on the forums. I have found a stock that looks similar but is being called a NRA Sportster, but all of the ones I have seen are springfields. This looks like an original stock it has stamps and cartouche markings on it. the barrel is dated in 1943 and has RA on it and a cartouche or bomb marking on it. It is a beautiful gun and very very well kept. I do not have the serial number with me but I can get it if I need to I am curious what the value of this would be.

I have made some not so great deals on curio and relic guns and trying to do my homework first this time.

What are the markings on the stock? Be advised that many M1903/03A3 stocks were cut down and are not usually NRA Sporter stocks.

The "metal" sounds like a M1903A3 and I'll bet the stock is a cut-down M1903A3.

if it was they did a really good job then.
It really looks very factory. I was told that he bought it from the armory the way I am seeing it. He has had it a really long time.
The markings are the cartouche stamped in the side and I think it had a few various others.

What does this do to the value?

As a probable sporterized rifle, it cuts value by 70%!

You need to post some pictures of the stock tip and the markings. A genuine NRA sporter has a cupped shotgun style steel buttplate.

it has a metal butt plate, with a door for oiler? nothing in there.

is 550 to much for this?

IF - what you are looking at is a nice Rem '03a3, (it could be a Rem 1903), and all it needs to be restored is an original stock and handguard than it is worth more than $250.

Decent, original stock, would be around $150.

Like cafdfw said, take the time to learn how to post pics and get more info before you drop 500 clams. :cheers:

If you have possesion of, or access to, "decent, original" M1903 Remington stocks for "about $150" just let me know where to meet you and I am on the way from Atlanta, cash and/or milled "R" parts in hand!
My #3184992 has an "R L B" stock, without finger grooves, that looks as if it began its life in the First Punic War between Carthage and Rome. A replacement more consistent with the rest of the nice rifle would be very nice and long overdue!

...not worth much at all. Maybe 150-250 max. You'd need stock , handguard, handguard ring, upper swivel and band and screw , it's holding spring , stacking swivel and band and screw , nose cap ( bayo lug ) and it's screw. All this new metal would need to match the color and wear of the buttplate , triggerguard , etc. , and the buttplate may need to be fited to the new stock, etc. , etc. After all these parts and work , you'd have a rifle worth 500 or so.

emmagee is right - $250 max. Even if the guy sold it for 250, your gonna be well into 200 gathering all the parts. You'd be lucky to get $20 for your cut stock. Sometimes you see a complete stock set w/handguard and all metal on auction, but you might be better off to keep looking. JMHO

Although I don't feel as neagtive as the others about restoring a cut-down rifle, $500-550 is about double what it is worth. If all the parts were the correct kind and finish, I might go as much as $300-350, but $500-550 is way too much.

The stock is a cut-down military stock - nothing more, nothing less.

It really comes down to price. If you can get it for under $200.00 go for it. Then putting it back right is reasonable. Good luck.

And to be correct, the safety shroud would also need to be replaced. It is SC. Bolt is parked as well. This is a sporterized, reworked rifle with mixed parts.
