I was looking for some help with this.

Hello gentlemen, I am Grananimal, you can call me Gran or G for short. I have this M1 carbine that my uncle gave to me back in 1993. I've shot it a bunch of time and really enjoy it. I noticed by the top back of the receiver the stock is cracked and it's pretty big. I don't know if this gun is collectible or just a mix of parts, so I was wondering if you folks could help me decide what I should do with it, ie put a new stock on it, make repairs to it.

This is what I know about it:

1.On the left side of barrel is Blue Sky/Arlington, VA. From reading here I understand it's an import, and the stamping is NOT too deep.
2. Top of barrel, behind front sight is stamped Saginaw S.G. Div. General Motors
3. Top of barrel below the above is a 8, and below that it looks like a U or a horseshoe.
4. The serial #3424957 is @ the rear sight. Below the rear sight (sight is obscuring all the letters) is SAG... that is all I can see.
5. There is a M on the right side of the safety.
6. On the barrel band is what looks like the letters AWCO.

Now I don't see any other markings on the stock or metal. I'm posting pics and if you guys need anything else please let me know. Your help is much appreciated.

Your pics are too big ... ;)

Upload the regular sized pics, as long as their under 250k in size, they'll be fine ... :thup:

All WW2 m1 carbines have some collector value, you have a Saginaw SG carbine, built at the Saginaw, MI. plant, barrel is original and imported back into the US by blue/sky. You will find that most parts are stamped with a mfg. code, upon dissasembly you will find them.

Probably 95% of carbines are Mixmasters (mix of parts) due to Government rebuilds and upgrades. Much of their value is in their utility as a shooter and as a piece of History, even if a Government Mixmaster. Keep shooting it and enjoying it. Imports like Blue Sky are worth only slightly less than CMP or DCM (pre-CMP) released weapons from Government inventory.

A question I have is if I replace the stock (I saw them on CMP and Fulton Amory websites) will it affect the collectability of the gun. I don't mean value because I won't sell it for sentimental reasons. But I'm worried about the stock being cracked. Also which stock would you folks go with the CMP or the Fulton, with metal or w/o. I not familiar with how the refurbish this rifle. Thanks again!

I have had good luck with CMP. I got a high wood, I cut Rock-ola stock on my Inland Racker. I wanted to save it as it was collectible, so I got a walnut SA Type V potbelly on EBAY for $25 to put it in to use as a shooter.

Your stock looks to be a common m1/m2 replacement, look in the left side slingwell for a mfg. stamp. If you want to replace the stock you need to decide which kind,WW2 saginaw stock, WW2 m1 replacement, m1/m2 replacement, walnut, birch, new production. Alot of stock choices.

Scott what is the difference with these stocks? I just want something that will fit w/o modification and I can shoot with.

99.999% of USGI stocks will be a drop in fit. For a shooter your best bet at finding a nice stock for a decent price would be a late mfg. USGI M2 stock, there are tons of them around.

Your stock is also repaired with threaded brass pins on the woods right rail along with the crack behind the recoil plate.
Look closely at the fit between your recoil plate to the rear of the receiver.......not to snug.
If replacing the stock I'd strongly advise putting a better fitting recoil plate on it. They do wear out. Doing so will improve accuracy.
BTW..... your stock shows the cut out for the M2 selector lever on the leftside.
With your carbine being a import it really isn't worth putting the $$ into a proper SG stock for it.
If your just shooting and don't want to tie a lot of $$ in it.....I would also pick up a solid shooter stock for it. Any USGI stock or even a Italian FAT stock will properly fit. With little out of pocket cost.

P.S. make sure any replacement stock you buy has the recoil plate screw escutheon nut still installed. It can be a bear to install one and get the correct fit.

You can fix the crack. It most likely was cracked by recoil when firing grenade-launching blanks during training. Take the action out of the stock and remove the recoil plate. Take some Super Glue, the thin, watery kind, and slowly 'wick' it into the crack from the starting point under/behind the recoil plate. It will fill, then empty as the glue soaks into the wood. Continue to dope it every 15 minutes or so until it refuses any more glue. The next morning it will be solid. You can sand off any excess or use Acetone to remove it. I just fixed a crack in my Saturn VUE polymer side panel the same way, and I've repaired many stocks and pistol grips like that too.

Thanks for the responses, much appreciated. The stock has 3 different cracks, so I'm looking to replace it.
Painter, I'm new to this so I would like to ask you where I can get the items you suggest? The stocks I've been looking at are 125.00- 150.00 a little high I thought. I'm not looking to spend too much. Is there someone on here who sells these accessories? I would rather give someone the business on the board. If someone on here is looking at my gun and wants suggest what I need and has the items I would prefer to buy it from them.

Since it is a rebuilt import stamped carbine, replacing the stock will not effect the value.

I wanted to thank all you guys who gave me advice on the stock and mags. This is the new stock compared to the old one. The whole project set me back 129.19 for the stock and 6 korean mags.
