Your help is needed, k98k project comming to realization

Gentlemen, you help will be much apreciated. A similar post exists in the gunsmithing section of the CGN forums.

I have, as many of you probably know by now, a cad scope, and I am now also in possesion of these very well made repro high turret rings.

I do not have the know how to put these two together. If you have the expereince and know how to do this, please contact me. I will ofcourse gladly pay any and all fees involved.

Sorry I advised contacting a person, then I realized it was the wrong guy.

I sent a barrel band to a fellow on CGN who did a similar build, and I believe he had his rings put on by ba fellow in Germany. I forget his name unfortunatly....

Theres a guy in Austria who does this kind of work, however he's booked till next year, and after which he will no longer be offering this service...

I just realized that these rings are 26.5mm, and my scope is 27mm..... :thdown:

I had been looking through my emails, but couldn't find the information I mentioned to you in another thread.

I then realized that it was originally posted on-line by koldt in the MKL entry (U.S. Knowledge Library), for people who repair M84 Garand scopes (click here).

I don't know if this guy is still in business or if he does German scopes, but here you go anyway.

Harvey is retired and his son in law is now doing it
he is in Calgary and is one smart puppy.I believe
I have his contact info at home and will bring it to
work and post it tomorrow.I did talk to Harvey though

You disassemble the scope, slide the rings on, solder them in place then re-assemble the scope.

Not exactly easy for the average individual...

the good news is that the rings can be opened up to 26mm by a decent gunsmith. The bad news is you have to disassemble the scope to get the rings on.

Try contacting gunco in Ottawa in 3 weeks time. They have the ability to do the work, but you'll have to confirm they are willing to take a non-local job.

So the rings need to be machined out to 27mm + the tolerance, so it's not an interference fit.

Getting the rings to 27mm shouldnt be a big problem, just another hurdle.

Something a wee bit on the strange side, I have a Prototype Springfield model 1903, N.M Double circle P w/G&H lever mount and a Zeiss scope very similar to the one you've shown. When I took it to Griffin and Howe one of the old timers there remembered putting a couple of those together for the U.S.M.C.. The fellow we bought it from got it from the Unserviceable rack in Ft Benning. He was really ****ed off because he really wanted one of the new U.S.M.C rifles with the Lyman scopes! Being a Lt. Col, he figured he should have one. I'm glad he didn't get it, but, the terms of the sale are that we never separate the scope from the gun, hum, I can live with that and have for over 20 years-SDH

Why don't you just return it and get the right size that you need, as he makes both sizes?

If the machining doesn't go so well, or if it's not aligned, basically you're out $500 and have a hunk of scrap metal.

Cause I bought them from a gentlemen who had a spare pare, he got them off robert... I saved 100 bucks.

Personally, I would look for another scope with a 26.5 Diameter Tube.
Good Machinists are anything but cheap these days.
You may have saved $100 but how much more will you have to spend?

The maschinist I know is a good friend, so his services will be free. German scopes arent cheap, nor always easily available.

well..

I know several maschinists, who are all busy people, but have had one take a close look at my rings to see if he could expand them to 27mm. He was afraid to destroy them all together. So Im going to have a chat with the other fellas I know to see if they are capable of doing it.

Once I have either had my rings expanded, or sold them to buy other rings, will I start contacting the various gunsmiths to have the last bit of the work done.

I wasnt expecting this to be a quick job as I rarely have much time, but I have the rifle, the scope, all I need is the rings to work, and Im done. So its worth the wait.

The fit could also be a press fit? Hence the 0.5 fit, but even for a scope, that's tight. Ever thought that maybe you could heat up the rings (Expansion;), not milled or make bigger in anyway or even solder) in an oven and when the scope is dismantled then slide the rings on, just remember to measure the placement precisely as it's a one shot deal.

Bart, Turret mount rings are always soldered to the scope tube.

Do you have any progress pics now that you've probably done some parts swapping?

I can certainly post some pics of the byf44 now it has the proper parts on.

As far as the scope and rings are concerned, there has been no change since last. Im emailed a bit with a scope repair guy whos contact info I got off this thread. But he has since not replied.

Im thinking of selling the rings I have now, to then purchase 27mm rings. That will cut off alot of issues, and speed this right up.
