Suggestion for Recoil Pad on Enfield No 4 Mk2

I am looking for suggestions on a good slip on recoil pad for my No 4 mk 2 - something that is not permanent that will slip on and off without marring the stock but will fit nicely and provide some cushioning without moving around too much.

I have a bad shoulder that can't take the recoil from extended shooting of bolt guns and figured someone else out there has been there and done that and could possibly offer up some good advice. I've not been able to find anything locally and will have to order whatever I decide to get online and I was hoping not to go through several iterations before finding something adequate. Any help is appreciated.

I've always had problems finding slip-on ones that will fit well - poosibly because by being a "fits all" solutuion they end up fitting none particularly well?

Anyway....I've got one of these for those days when the shoulder cries enough!:

I have found that wearing a jacket with some padding in the right places works fine (my British 1968 DPM combat jacket springs to mind). This might not be so successful when the temperature hits 105 degrees F lol.

Here's a different way to handle recoil and make it a little easier on the body shooting No.4's ... :D

Keep your eye open on eBay, as they turn up from time to time ... ;)

~Angel~ uses an add-on Lee-Enfield No.4 muzzle brake. It simply pulls over the muzzle and straps on the bayonet lug. You hand tighten the screw and you're good to go. She uses them on her No.4(T)'s and finds a recoil reduction of at least 50%. She's able to shoot for hours without tiring and makes a day out more enjoyable, although I suppose technically it's cheating as compared to shooting them the way they were issued. :D

Thanks for the suggestions - I have done some searching online as one user commented but I was hoping that someone would give some feedback to what worked or didn't work for them specifically. I always find it useful to query members on forums like this rather than going off of the "customer reviews" on particular retail outlets. I do like the looks of the recoil harness though - thanks for the heads up.

As far as wearing a thick jacket - I think I would die of heat stroke this time of year in FL - temp today was in the upper 90's with the humidity the heat index was around 101 F. I do appreciate the suggestions though, the muzzle break attachment is pretty neat - I've never seen one for the No 4 before, interesting.

I found a leather slip on recoil pad that pachmayr makes that looks interesting, they have one in leather and a velcro closure. Only seems to come in two sizes (Small and Large) in the brown color version, but I think the harness seems to be the best/easiest solution for now.

Easy as 1..2...3...
1- locate a spare butt for your mk of Enfield and a good recoil pad.
2- cut butt square and fasten pad, paying attention to length.
3- remove issued butt and replace with modified butt, which can be put back on at anytime.

I use a Galco med pad on most of my mil-surps.

Easy on and off, fits LE's, K31's and Mausers. Nice gel pack for reduction, a bit spendy compared to most other pads.

Try a PAST rcoil pad, I find them very effective. Buy one use it for all the guns which require it. They are rather common at the larger shooting stores and could be purchased on line. I do think the clamp-on muzzle break is a great idea for range work, although I despise them in the feild. GRF

Why not get one of the butt-stocks that crops up on e-bay fairly regularly? Then you can cut it and modify it at will. No need to worry about ruining the original then.

The PAST pad works well and since it's on you, not the rifle, it works for all your guns. I use one for my 14 year old daughter since she's just not quite big enough to handle the recoil yet.

Where in FL are you? I'm in the panhandle.

You can buy one on eBay that fits on the end of MK2 Enfield using the screws from the butt plate. It fits on the plate so there are no permanent changes to your rifle. If the link doesn't work just search for Enfield recoil pad.

Anyone know if there is a slip on available with a cheek pad? I've seen one on a rifle in a pic so I know they exist but I have no idea where to find one.

Gee I wonder how the "greatest Generation" from whatever side used these rifles without "recoilpads" and shot the darn things for years on end in some cases.

Personally I "sling up" and shoot prone. Today I fired 60 rounds out of my Enfield, 20 plus out of a K31 and 20 plus out of a m91/30. My shoulder is fine.... my chin/cheek area...... thats another matter. Nothing a little of the wifes makeup wont "blend in" for going to Church Sunday AM. :lol:

They were mostly kids just like i was when i was in the military. Unfortunately, 30+ years of high power shooting, disc replacement surgery in my neck and and a good dose of arthritis makes using a PAST pad standard operating procedure for me with high power rifles from here on in.

Did your front sight work out OK?

Brian: Yes. I got the "new" front sight pieces installed and using 150gn PPU ammo got a 200 yard zero witht the rear sight a click or 2 over the 200 rear sight setting. I used the - 30 front blade and still had to file down the blade to get that ammo zeroed.

When I finished shooting foe the day I brought out the Enfield again and fired 15 additional rounds at 200 yards on a NRA SR-C target. Me, the rifle and PPU ammo held the 10 ring. I wasnt really impressed but I dont know if it was me, the rifle or the ammo. I'll try it again next time Im at the range.

I also have a bad back....D.D.D., 8 fused vertebra and then a car accident...so the big sticks are very painful to shoot without some help. These work well for me.

Have you considered using a Past should pad? I occasionally use one now and find it make a huge difference. If you used a slip-on and the should pad I bet it would have the kick of a .223.. just my 2cents.
