Can Parkerizing be chemically removed or does just take elbow grease and some emery paper?
I have a stock that needs a rifle of this vintage and I’m thinking of pulling the barrel off , a 1944 barrel, cleaning off the park, drill and tap for a Lyman 48 and rust blue.
I know this is a rebuilt with a bunch of different parts but I hate to mess it up, looks unfired since the overhaul. The bore is like new.

I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Please, leave it alone. You will only mess it up. Wrong candidate for backyard overhaul. Springfield didn't merely rust blue them, they were wire brushed in a certain way and are very obvious to the basic collector. You need to keep looking for the "right" gun for your project. Sorry, you have not found it, yet.
What sort of stock? A fancy sporter? I don't think you would fool are around w/ anything that's not "interesting'!
Hi Mike, I think that Navel Jelly or diluted Pool acid will remove park or baking soda on low/med preasure as well without disturbing anything.
I want too see pic's when its done!!
P.s. what are you going too do with the barrel?
Calf-Steve, Mike Petrov knows his way around a 03 I think its in good hands.
I don't think Naval Jelly will remove parkerizing, it will remove bluing. If this is US arsenal parkerizing, it will be a tough removal. I am not sure if Michael Petrov has any other candidiates for this project, but I do feel this is not the candidate. He really needs a receiver with little to no bluing left on it. Lots of 03's around here that need a rust blue job. Sad to say, that particualr receiver doesn't need a rust blue job. If you bead blast it, it will not look right with a blue finish. Brownell's has/had "White out" (?), and it removed bluing. Not certain about parkerizing. This is a tough one.
Sorry, forgot all about this thread. I'll trade this one off for one more appropriate to my needs. I did not realize that anyone would care about a rebuilt.
Yes, I have a custom stock missing the rifle most likley built shortly after WWI. The barreled action in the stock was for picture taking, it's from another rifle.

Beautiful stock, Michael. The cheekpiece would have to be my favorite part. Let us know when it is complete.
I'd post it on Gunbroker for a trade for a Bluded version of the barreled action. Original MILSURP barreled actions are getting harder to find. It would be a crime to Bubba that action.

Lovely, lovely piece. But, understand, there are many candidiates for overhaul out there. That first rifle is a candidate for re-coversion to military condition. Good luck on the project and I would certainly like to see the finished product.
I have to agree with Steve, but I value nice arsenal rebuilt rifles more than a lot of people do.

Let me say that there are very few people who understand how the older sporters were made and most restorations jobs, with good intentions, get fouled up.
There are many times when the work is beyond my ability and I have to get other craftsmen involved. This is a very historical rifle with a WWI history. Someone mounted a scope, bent the bolt, cut out the stock and notched the receiver for the bend bolt. Work like this can easily surpass the original cost of the rifle.

BTW Michael a few weeks back i was in Bernardsville and handled a sporter with one of those peep sights on the firing pin. Seemed like a real knuckle buster particularly if the sight was folded down to clear a scope. whats your take on them?

I like the different bolt peep sights, they are many different types but they all help to make a slim rifle. I have not had a problem but then I've never shot one with it folded down.

For the record, any rifle that I have anything to do with that is restored I mark. The mark is always in a place that can be seen without dismantling the rifle.

Seymour R. Griffin made rifles for a long time while he was employed at The Hotel Bretton Hall in Manhattan at 86th Street and Broadway. He both lived and worked at the Hotel, this was before he started the firm of Griffin & Howe.
The rifle with the bolt-peep has a stock by Fred Adolph.
While my first thought was: "Why the Heck would you want to ruin a beautiful surplus M1903?" After looking at your photos, I've decided that your work enhances these rifles rather than ruins them and I wish to applaud you for your artistry!
Thanks for posting. I'll stick with my current hobby of Milsurp rifles as close to issue condition as possible, but for a hunter, your rifle is amazing!
For as long as I can remember it's been the military collectors against the sporter collectors :).
The sporter guys screw up the military rifles and the military guys mess up the sporters. This last empty stock lost the metal to someone who is trying to restore it back to military.
I seldom if ever talk about the value of these sporters and wounder sometimes if I did maybe folks would not be so quick to part them out.
If it helps to sleep at night most of the pre-WWI sporters were never complete rifles, the gunmaker or owner just ordered the metal parts needed to make a sporter.
All this restoration talk reminds me to say that there are times when it should not be done IMO.
This rifle is a good example, crack stock, worn smooth checkering and much of the bluing is gone. The rifle was made by Wundhammer for a a young Lt. in the Army named Townsend Whelen. The rear sight is a prototype Lyman 48.

I think I would keep the Whelen gun the way it is, too.
