I'm new to this forum and I'm really impressed with all of the content that is available here. I placed an order with CMP for a service grade Garand at the beginning of July. I just got confirmation that my order was received last week. I am looking forward to the arrival of that rectangular box in the next few weeks. I'll post an update when that time arrives.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your M1 purchase. You have now been infected with the dreaded disease called Garanditis. A word of advice,buy a safe now to house your future purchases of Garands.
My Garand arrived this morning. Unfortunately, I was away at work and didn't get a chance to fiddle with it until later in the day. I ordered a Springfield Armory service grade rifle. I am very happy with what was delivered. The stock is a little dinged up, but most of the parts are of SA origin. The bolt was manufactured by HRA.
I'm new to the whole world of surplus rifles. Is there any trick to removing the excess cosmoline? We're in the middle of a major heat wave right now. I placed the lower stock in direct sunlight and this seemed to work pretty well at softening up the excess grease. Is there a trick to removing the cosmoline from the wood found around the barrel, but without removing the barrel from the stock? I appreciate your experience and knowledge.

My first Garand arrived two weeks ago, also S. Grade from the CMP. Other than the H&R op rod and trigger group, the barrel/action are SA like yours. Were your barrel or action built in the 50s?
Yes, the receiver is dated to 1955. I would presume that to be the same with the barrel, but I'm not completely positive about that. I look forward to taking it to the range soon.
You have a real keeper. Put the stock in direct sunlight. The dash of your wife's car works well. Careful, don't let any grease run on the dash! Good for you!
cosmo removal during a heat wave--black plastic bag in trunk of car parked in sun. spilt the action from the reciever and it will fit in a large plastic trash can placed in the sun.
Excellent, I use mineral spirits on all metal parts. This will quickly dissolve any grease or cosmo. For the wood, sun and dash is a great suggestion. Just wrap it in allot of paper towels or an old beach towel. For the "Wood" on approach, Personally, I use a 50/50 mix of Purple Power and hot water. This will get most of the surface grease out and not damage the stock. Nothing wrong with cleaning your milsurp with water but you must make sure its completely dry when done. Compressed air is best but direct low humidity heat (Read "Southwest") will be just fine. Enjoy.Quote:

Although I've never tried any shooting beyond 100 yards, except .22s at the river, your shooting appears to be excellent.
Congrats on your new rifle:bow:. My 'problem' is whether to sell the handy Mini 30 FTF (cheap plink ammo), just to buy a second Garand.
With the tedious, time-consuming single-stage Lee press (all manually trimmed etc, trimmer often Yanked :( out of tight cases with difficulty...), it will take lots of time to reload for the Garand, as it is for my Lee-Enfields.
My answer would be "no." I keep a plinker rifle around because even with its cheaper ammo, a trip to a range to introduce a friend to rifles can cost $100. I'm not rich, so I need the cheap ammo option.

The hot water spray works great, especially on a hot day when you can leave it out in the sun to melt out and dry. I plan on visiting Anniston this fall, would love to just go through rifle after rifle!
UPDATE:
I was able to take my M1 to the range the other day. This was the first time that I was able to use my newest acquisition. Everything about this gun and the ammo functioned perfectly. Overall, I'm very impressed with the quality that the CMP has to offer the public.
I received many compliments from other people about this firearm. Honestly, I think they were jealous at what I had and what they didn't. Sure, there were plenty of AR-15s, SKSs, and AKs, but there was only one M1 Garand, and that one was mine!
I like this guy. He told us about the M1 Garand that he bought from CMP and he is very happy with it. I'm happy for him. Did he start yelling because their stupid forum is down for the umptieth time? Nope Not at all He's happy with his rifle and wants to talk M1 on this forum So M1 afficiados here's another Brother Welcome Milkman and If I can be of assistance don't hesitate to call I don't own the M1, but carried one a long time ago

Thanks for the warm welcome. There are so many knowledgeable and helpful people on this forum. I've learned a lot about my rifle just by poking around different threads when I have a chance.
