I have Inland s/n 9807XX with bayonet lug and adjustable sights. It currently resides in an M1A1 stock that has also been thru a rework, but I do not believe that to be "correct". Would a Type II be more "correct"? What would be proper ?? Somehow I've got it in my mind that this bbl/action needs to be in a Type II stock..

It's a deep question. I personally don't remember the serial number ranges for original M1A1s, but if the carbine were sold by CMP in that stock or if there were other 'provenance' that it had been in that stock while in the custody of the government, even if it were done during a rebuild, I would keep it that way. Otherwise you're going to need a rather expensive stock for it, and with the rebuild features it probably wouldn't be worthwhile.
Ronnie, there was an article in "Rifleman" a while back with the serial number blocks of early and late M1A1's. A rifle would be a possible as no records were kept as to folders or regular stocks. I have it my pile and will get it out in the morning. HTH.....Frank

Ronnie, my opinion is simple...
No matter what stock you put the receiver in, it is not going to be in its original configuration. Moving it to a full stock will just be one more change to its 65 year old history. Also, what good would it do for the M1A1 stock? You will not have the "correct" receiver conifguration to put in it either. I would personally leave it in the condition that it is now. You know where you got it from, but you do not know how it got there. Therefore any changes you make will not make the carbine any more "correct" than it is now.
Shoot it and enjoy it - or cough it up (give you $178.95 for it right now).

Good morning Ronnie, the article on M1A1's 'Riflemen" November 2005, "Stand In The Door" by Bruce N. Canfield.
1st. production run M1A1's shipped between 10-'42 to 10-'43. appx. 71,000 serial number range appx. 42,000 to 850,000. Some what out of your serial number range. But a possibility. What is your barrel date? High wood stocks.
2nd. production run 5-'44 to 12-'45, appx. 70,000 between serial numbers appx. 5,150,000 to 6,700,000. Low wood stocks. Somewere I read the grip was slightly differant on the later stocks. Hope that helps.....Frank

That is not an unusual barrel. Thats a Brown-Lipe-Chapin barrel for Inland. I understand that they had an reputation as some of the best barrels made for the Carbine program. I would assume that your carbine is very accurate.
I would check your front sight, though... it looks like it has been files ALOT.
Oh, and I am going to have to increase my offer to $213.63 because of the added premium for the BLC barrel. Do we have a deal?
Ronnie that's interesting, your carbine with that 9-43 barrel would fit in the time frame for the 1st production run with the early type stock. Although your serial number is a little over. Being through a rebuild, chances they started out together are slim. Since they have both been through a rebuild, putting it in a type II stock in my opinion would not make it any more "correct". I think leave it as is, it's an early carbine and an early stock, both having gone through a rebuild. JMHO have a good one.....Frank
The serial number, 9807XX, is well within the correct range for first production M1A1 carbines. The fact that the carbine has a bayonet lug and adjustable sight means any of the other individual parts could have been changed at the time it went through rebuild. If the M1A1 stock is of the first variety there is a possibility it was assembled as an M1A1 but once it entered rebuild all bets are off. Now the stock type comes down to personal preference.
Thanks guys, I think that settles it.... The rifle stays as is. That's how I got it. I bought it concentrating on the correct stock.... And only later noticed the "funny" markings on the bbl.
Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in a while !!:move eek:
