I do have access to some of his records if you folks would like for me to look up data. Please let me know --- Please now some of the information is Classified. I can only give you information on what records that are not locked.

Art Tuttle was John Garands trouble shooter and problem solver. He worked directly with Garand to work out the problems with the design and operation of the original M1 rifle, beginning with the gas trap design up into the gas port rifles. He is quoted extensively in Billy Pyle's book "The Gas Trap Garand". Art probably knew more about the original Garands than anyone except John Garand himself.

Well, this post caused me to finally buy and read Billy Pyles book about "The Gas Trap" Garand.
Great read!! Filled with facts.
However I wonder if Art's grandson who may monitor this forum, could answer a question, if it is in the notes.
That question is the mystery of the barrel stampings. 1-SA, 2-SA or 3-SA followed by the barrel date. It was my impression that it referred to the shift that the barrel was produced on, but that is not considered accurate. Possibly there is a answer hidden in Tuttles notes?
Art Tuttle, Garands Troubleshooter, from Pyles book, would easily have known that fact, and just about everything else we want to know about.
I don't understand why he does this. He post who he is then disappears. He has emailed twice just like this only to not answer anymore. I am starting to believe he is not who he says he is or something else is wrong??????????????? I am going to ask Billy Pyle about him to see if he is normal or real. Rick B
It is my understanding the 1-SA, 2-SA, or 3-SA refers to the heat treat ovens SA added as they ramped up barrel production.....
I have never heard that one. Doesn't seem very likely to me, but no one seems to know for sure what it means.Quote:

These numbers were still used when barrel production was decreased from later 1944 through 1945 so your statement doesn't wash.Quote:

As of now, we know what it isn't but we don't know what it is. Let's don't turn this into an "Internet Legend" without any facts to make logical deductions.
Tuttle, from the Pyle Gas Trap book, would have many notes in his files.
Just having his daily trouble sheets reviewed if they exist, would answer many many nagging little items.
Besides the barrel, when exactly the sight seals were actually stopped would show up. Also his notes on bolt heat lots and inventory and strategic storage methods would likely be covered. Could be a treasure trove. I am sure that Pyle must have an "in" to the notes, having interviewed Tuttle.
Actually, come to think of it--Billy Pyle must have asked all those questions and probably knows everything, but is mum for a reason--- Sworn to secrecy by the clandestine "Skull and Bones Garand Society"!!
Billy seen all of Art's records and if there was anything more that was special he would have printed it. Art Grandson will amount to nothing of importance from what I understand and by what we are seeing here and on other forums. He post this and then disappears. He emails people and then stops answering right away. My opinion is he is fishing for someone to buy into Arts work but like I said Billy Pyle has gone through all of it so you will not see anything that hasn't been gone through.
