Type III Safety Characteristics

I acquired a small group of carbine parts and tools. Amongst the goodies were three plain face push safeties. Can anybody help me determine if they are real, commercial, or fake from the following description? I also bought another one before I had any idea of what I was looking at. I include it as well. I am planning to trade these for other needed carbine parts and don't want to mislead anybody. I won't turn loose of them unless the authenticity is clear. The notch depth measurements might be a couple of thousandths off because of the difficulty in aligning the mic - they could be either slightly low or high.

#1) Shiny blue/black finish, .693" long; .308" wide.; square notch is .258" wide, .153" deep Has slight dimples on both faces (mold casting marks?)

#2) Black park, .700" long; .311" wide; square notch is .253" wide, .146" deep.
#3) Black park, .704" long; .311" wide; square notch is .251" wide, .133" deep
#4) Black park, .700" long; .311" wide; square notch is .255" wide, .158" deep.

I have one in my carbine that is supposed to be genuine. About .702", it's plain on both ends and dark Parkerized, just a little darker than the receiver. Works great!

Thanks. I got some help offline from another member and am just beginning to develop a grasp. Here's a couple of pics. Pictures are large, so they take awhile to load. In the second picture the safeties are grouped 1-2 (left to right, top row) and 3-4 (l-r, bottom row). #3 is much shinier than it looks in photo. #4 has slight linear marks and #1 has faint circular marks. Opinions and reasoning behind them are welcome. If any are USGI I'll be looking for opportunity to swap for other parts, but will give my offline advisor first crack. Thanks.

Thanks, caf. In the meantime I stumbled on some possible further info on #3. CCNL #254-5 has a sketch of a safety that looks like #3 above - the shiny one at bottom left. Like #3, the one in the newsletter looks like a Type II, but with the two dimples of a Type II. Unlike the one in the newsletter, mine also has some material removed from the middle ridge - clearly not wear, but regular grinding/milling marks. The dimples were not visible in the previous photos so I include the new photo here. Any thoughts?

It almost looks like it was a type2 then someone changed it to a type. Interesting pics.

It looks to me like someone wanted to make the safety easier/quieter to disengage, but over did it. They had to make two deeper divits for the detent because they took too much out of the middle.

Brian, I appreciate your response, but I now have to wonder about the reason for that person's response. I know that most of us try to protect information from the "humpers" out there, but until a secure system of information exchange is found do we have to resort to private e-mails and PM's? That spells death for forums.

The information does get out when it is offered up for any format for dissemination. As one example, there is nothing stopping a humper from joining the carbine club (under an assumed name) and investing the $300 to get all the newsletters. No doubt someone in California has a drop postoffice box in in Vegas to gain the information in the newsletter. As long as there is money to be made, everyone will have to weigh public knowledge vs control over the forgeries.

Not picking a side, just making an observation.

The dilemma is that on the one hand nice guys want to help others who have an intense interest in the same subject, yet don't want to feel like a chump when the info gets misused. The internet has speeded up the info transfer astronomically. It is the Wild West as to applying the old intellectual property rules that developed slowly over centuries. To some whose research interest came along with the emergence of the internet, all info is free. Look at the Napsters. In the old days new info transferred by word of mouth, an occasional magazine article, and after years - or maybe a lifetime - an authoritative book. It's a new world and we'll thrash around in it, sometimes getting it right, sometimes not.

It has nothing to do with hiding something from "humpers". It doesn’t make fiscal sense for someone to turn a type II safety into a type III. In the post I edited I posted "Those that pay close attention to details can tell you there are variations of type II and type III safeties." So if someone wants to start some crap over that than fine I'll opt out of the conversation.
