After years of seeing these only occasionally, and realizing I "shoulda" bought a trunkload back in the 60's when they were selling for $100.00, I finally decided to take the plunge (TWICE !). This has to be the most interesting and fun 22 plinker I've yet shot ! It also gives any of my more modern 22's a run for their money in the accuracy department. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can get more info on these ? Thanks for your help.

Not really in the same category but we shouldn't forget the little .22" sub calibre fitted rifles too. The .22" L1A1 rifles and .22" L85 & L86 SA80's are great fun too.
I well remember using the H&K Kit in the SLR for the first time at the "Training Theatre" at Hythe. In later years when I had influence in such "training", I ensured that we did it. The most fun (in those days ) that one could have (in my opinion) without removing clothing.Quote:

Is it true then that ex-military auto-loaders converted to .22 are not banned in the UK ? Why do we not see .22 Bren guns or Sterlings (semi-auto of course) ?
We've seen an example of a .22" L1A1 rifle has been alllowed - on the basis that the sub calibre kit is a permanent fitting and irreversible (? spelling). Using that as an example................. Oh, let's not go there! In the UK and elsewhere, you can still own a single shot bolt action SA80 rifle so presumably can also own a sub calibre kit
No problem with owning a sub calibre kit, for any single shot rifle (straight pull) as long as the kit is .22LR and on your FAC, regarding the fixed conversion of the L1A1 it would of been done before the semi auto ban, if it was done now it would be classed as a conversion of a sect 5 firearm (not allowed and a great risk of poridge for the next 5 years).Quote:

Just curious ... if the FAL L1A1 rifles advertised in France are brand new ( as advertised) could they be re-built as .22's and come within UK regulations as sect 1 ?
No, they would have to be made up brand-new from never-barrelled receivers.
I would say NO, but if they were advertised as, newbuild .22 rifles then it would be within the law, what you need to remember is were ever in the world the L1A1 is, in the eyes of the UK law it would be classed as a section 5, but our laws do not stretch to what that country classification is and does with the rifle in question, so if the rifle was converted then this would not be illegal in that country, but if it was imported it would be classed as a converted section 5.
If someone had a large amount of new FAL L1A1 parts, then they could be built up as, either .22 semi auto or straight pull in any calibre, and would be within the law as they are being produced as section 1 firearms.
