No. 5 "Jungle" carbine

On Friday I went to a local gun store to see if the Lee-Enfield No. 5 carbine I saw there a few months ago was still there. It was, so I decided it must be fate and I bought it.

No. 5 features: lightening cuts on the barrel knox form, "wasp waist" triggerguard, and rear sight with maximum range of 800 meters instead of the usual 1300 meters.

I did not find any import markings, only British export markings and "England", indicating it was probably imported pre-1968.

Looks like a nice BSA made No. 5, always liked the 1945 dated stuff.

Good catch. My first one looked like that, the mag also was numbered to the gun. That was important then. I don't even know if people know about that anymore.

I noticed you removed the top wood guard. Was it serialed to the rifle also? The last one I got had the butt and the top guard serialed to the rifle along with all the usual items matching.

I glanced inside the handguard when I had it off and I didn't see a serial number. Also, there is no serial number on the magazine.

By the way, what's the story on the top rifle of the three?? Very early yes?

That is the nicest BSA No.5 I have ever seen...exactly what I am looking to get myself. What a great find!

Its very very frightening to see cocked rifles (and it doiesnt do them any good either)

You're right there Al. You'll always see real Armourers squeeze the trigger when they close the bolts so that the cocking piece isn't subject to dry firing

Very nice #5, the screws are even in great shape! Maybe not even turned?

Almost the first thing that I learned on a CCF Cadet Armourers' course - some years ago. I remember always making sure to do - mostly because it looks flash.

:thup:yep sure looks like a nice no1, does it still have the mag cut off as i cant see it in the pic.
And is the trigger gaurd the original as from most no1s ive seen they have a loop and ring to hold the magazine with the rifle so you cant take the mag off. Does it have volley sights aswell cant see from the pic side.

heres a pic or two of my jungle carbine which is still in the progress of a rebuild, just needs the barrell and the rear sights rebuilt. Never mind the barrell which is on it at the moment its a heavy no111 lightly screwed in for show.
